GIFT FROM THE POPE.
■NECKLACE FOR A STATUE.

The Roman Catholic Archbishop of Liverpool, .Dr. Downey, has returned to England from Rome, bringing a gift of a necklace from the Pope which is 1 to adorn the statue of the Madonna in the Roman Catholic Cathedral of Liverpool. The necklace consists of large amethysts, set in diamonds.
His Holiness expressed to the Archbishop the greatest interest in the progress made with the building, which, although, not so big as Saint Peter’s in Rome, which is a Basilica, is to be the largest Cathedral in the world.
