A GAME OF CHANCE,
SIDE SHOWMAN IN COURT. FINE OF £5 INFLICTED. Although he had been warned previously by the police, Thomas Albert Durran, a side showman, persisted in conducting a “ Dart Board ” game at the Waikato Winter Show, on Saturday evening. Before Mr Wyvern Wilson, S.M., in the Hamilton Magistrate's Court, tills morning, Durran was charged with conducting a game of chance, and was convicted and fined £5. It was shown by Sergeant J. Harley, who prosecuted, that accused had been before the Court previously for a similar offence, and when arrested had over £37 in his possession. He was a regular side-showman, G2 years of age and lived at Wanganui. The Sergeant explained that those who participated in the game had to rely upon the throw of one individual. The money Invested was pooled. As the police had explained to accused Ihe only way to play the game and come within the letter of the law, was to give each investor a throw at the board.
