WOMEN’S DIVISION.
FOURTH BIRTHDAY. The Cambridge branch of the Women’s Division of the Farmers’ Union oelebrated its fourth birthday on Friday afternoon. The function took the form of a social gathering, and the feature of the occasion was the large birthday cake, which was beautifully iced by members of the division. There were about 100 present, including the president and members of the Men’s Branch. The president, Mrs W. G. Care, congratulated the branch upon its wonderful progress, and in doing so paid a tribute to the splendid pioneering work done by their first president (Mrs R. Feisst). The membership when the branch was first formed was only eight. Mrs Stubbs, president of the South Auckland sub-provincial, addressed the gathering on the aims and objects of the division. Mrs R. D. Duxfleld, past president of the Hamilton branch, also gave a most interesting address, in which she explained the working of the housekeeper system. The sub-provincial had sent out 80 housekeepers to families in all parts of the province during the year. These housekeepers are; capable of taking sole charge of house- j holds and in some cases will even help! with the milking. Mrs Duxfleld ex-! plained that the housekeepers are sent out to 'anyone regardless of whether they are in poor circumstances. Those able, are expected to pay for the services of the housekeeper. During the afternoon a programme of musical and elocutionary items was rendered and much appreciated, and a dainty afternoon lea was served. Those contributing items were: — Piano solo, Mrs W. J. Smellie; song, Miss Appleby; recitation, Miss D. Lockhead; violin solo, Miss Feisst; recitation, .Airs Cooper.
