Mr G. de Vahl Davies, of Sydney, is at the Hamilton Hotel. Mr H. G. R. Mason, M.P., for Auckland Suburbs, is in Hamilton. Mr Mason will address a public meeting to-night. Mr. H. Williams, manager of the Majestic Theatre at Taihape, has been appointed-to take charge of the Majestic House at Oamaru. The Mayor of Dargaville, Mr F. A. Jones, announced at the last meeting of the council that he would not be seeking re-election. Mr Jones has been Mayor lor the last six years. Mr A. P. Ward, son of the late Sir Joseph Ward, returned by the Rangitata last evening from a six months’ trip abroad. Messrs J. D. Curtayne, A. H. Hoyle, W. Wiseman, W, H. Fraser, L. A. Maples, C. V. Maunganui for Sydney, where he will put in a couple of months’ holiday. •Mr H. C. Ctioyce was the guest yesterday, at Auckland, of the directors, buyers and staff members of over 10 years standing, who had gathered to congratulate him on his 90th birthday. He was presented with a handsome clock. The Hon. R. Masters, M.L.C., left Wellington yesterday for the earthquake zone in order to confer with the relief committees at Hastings and Napier. The Public Trustee announces that consequent upon the promotion of Mr W. M. Barr to be Assistant-Public Trustee, Mr F. Menneer has been appointed chief accountant to the Public Trust Office. Mr Menneer is a member by examination of the New Zealand Society of Accountants. The new officer to command the Devonport Naval Base, Commander E. L.- Berthon, arrived at Auckland from Southampton by the Rangitata last evening. Commander Berthon, who was one of the naval officers who took part In the historic raid on Zeebrugge in April, 1918, is to succeed Commander Nelson Clover _at the naval base, and will take up his duties this month. Professor R. Lawon (Dunedin) and Mr A. K. Anderson (Christchurch) have been elected to fill the vacancies on the University Entrance Board caused by the resignations of Professor Thompson and Rev. H. Crosse, representing the Academic Board and registered private and secondary schools respectively. In each case only one candidate was nominated. Mr H. H. Ferguson, M.A., of St. Andrew’s University, arrived at Auckland by the Rangitata last evening. He -Is proceeding to Dunedin as lecturer in experimental psychology at- Otago University. Mr L. Morrison, B.Sc., a gra> duate of Aberdeen University, alsu arrived, and will take up an appointment at Canterbury College as lecturer in entomology. Mr T. L. Churchyard, who lias retired from the National Mutual Life Association, at Wellington, was presented by Mr W. A. Martin, general manager for New Zealand, on behalf of the staff, with a gold watch, suitably engraved, and a gold-mounted cigar holder. .Mr Churchward is one of the oldest members of Hie Wellington Bowling Club. He was also secretary and treasurer of the Wellington Bowling Centre from 19US to 1912. Lieutenant-Colonel E. P. Le Breton, a retired British Army officer, is accompanying Lord Baden-Poweil on his tour, and will act as touring commissioner. Prior to 1914 LiculenantColonel Le Breton served on Hie North-West and North-East frontiers of India, and during tile Great War he saw active service in Arabia and Mesopotamia.
