BOWLING.

HERE AND THERE. GREEN AND PAVILION GOSSIP. WEEK-END HAPPENINGS. (By “Toucher.”) The visit by eight rinks from the Hamilton Bowling Club to Whitiora on Saturday was the first inter-club (centre clubs) fixture of the current season so far as the first-mentioned club is concerned. The day was nuite pleasant for bowling, despite a little wind, and as the Whitiora green was in good order the visitors ''thoroughly enjoyed the afternoon. Earlier in the season one had heard statements to t.hp effect that Whitiora was experiencing a lot of trouble.with Onehunga weed, but, whatever basis there may have been for these statements, it would appear that the club has taken effective steps to lessen the evil, as on Saturday'there was very little of this weed to be observed on the green itself or on the bank. The green, in fact, looked very well and in general played very well also. With eight rinks engaged on either side Hamilton won seven games to one, the margin in points for the visitors reading 203 to 113. The winning Hamilton skips were; Yeaman; Wilkes, Hawken, Bell, snr., Pilkington, Robinson and Horton, whilst D. Carswell was in charge of the successful Whitiora combination. At Hamilton East. Frankton Railway sent four rinks and a colts team to Hamilton East, and when everything was counted up at the end of the afternoon the issue proved about as close as it well could have been. The colts game panned out a draw, whilst among the older players each side won two games, with a margin on actual points of 9 in favour of Hamilton East. Of the home side Skips Curry and Chapman won their games, whilst for Railway Frost and Beauchamp commanded winning teams. Cambrtdqe at Ngaruawahia. - The Cambridge Club got four rinks away to Ngaruawahia, and here again honours were even in regard to the number of games to each side, the visitors winning two and the home tw'fr. On points, however, victory rested with Ngaruawahia by 87 to 62. For Cambridge Dix and Tucker skipped winning rinks, and for Ngaruawahia, Rowe and Rogers did likewise. Champion Rinks Contest. The South Auckland Centre executive recently decided to alter the date for the final contest for the Howden Shield between Whitiora, Matamata, Ngaruawahia and Thames, the winners of the four sections in this competition. The date originally set down for this final was January 21, but owing to the fact that play in the Dominion championships will not be over by then it was decided to make a postponement until January 29—Anniversary Day. Consequently the four section winners will meet on the Hamilton Club’s greens on that day instead of on January 21 as originally arranged. One-day Tournaments. Anniversary Day will also see oneday tournaments staged at Frankton and Otorohanga, and as the day is observed as a holiday in a number of occupations both clubs should experience a good response from players. Next Wednesday, January 21, the Whitiora Club is holding one of these popular one-day gatherings, which also is likely to be well patronised. ' 1 ■ Tour of Taranaki. The tour of the Taranaki Centre territory by bowlers from the South Auckland Centre has always proved most enjoyable in the past, and there seems every reason to expect that this season’s expedition to the Taranaki bowling greens will again provide a strong attraction to players from hereabouts. Arrangements have been made for play to begin (probably at some of the New Plymouth greens) on Monday, March 16, so presumably most South Aucklanders will leave for the scene of action on March 15. Play will continue for the remainder of the week on various greens throughout the Taranaki Province.

VICTORIAN VETERANS. “INCIDENT'” IN FINAL. Two-many times champions met in the last stages of the Victorian veterans’ single-handed event when I was in Melbourne last week (writes “Boomerang” in the Sydney Referee), and a large gallery turned up to witness a contest that was spoiled by an incident towards the finish. Jack Sheedy, three times Australian champion before ’the advent of the A.8.C., and holder of about 22 champion events all told, including State, and many times club title-holder, is a retired publican, and his opponent was the Rev. King, of Cotlingwood Club. Many years ago Mr King migrated to ttfis, country, and played bowls in Queensland, where he was a sort of rose in the desert, wasting his bowling fragrance on an atmosphere where it was not appreciated. ■ Later lie became established in Victoria, and Elsternwiclc (Melbourne) soon discovered that it possessed a bowling parson of the -first water. A couple of seasons ago ihe won .he Victorian champion of champions event, beating Jack Bunce. It was no wonder, then, that the ends of the rink at Melbourne green were crowded when parson and publican faced each other. A rare game resulted, and Rev . King led and established a good margin. He was lying snugly at a late stage when Sheedy drove with his last wood, struck a -short one, which in turn

struck the 'kitty, running with the latter into the ditch. The scorer chalked the bowl that had hit the white, wrongly, of course, and although King was lying two shots, his opponent was awarded the shot. Who “awarded” it is difficult to understand. This appeared to have a marked effect upon the rev. gentleman, who lost two fours in succession, and the match, by three points —the number that would have made him winner as he was 18 at the time of the incident. They play the game very keenly in Victoria, and it was stated that an appeal would be made to the V.B.A. It might be in season to mention here that a scorer has no jurisdiction, and without he was appointed umpire by mutual consent his “decisions go lor
