PALERMO
A PROMISING SPRINTER. There Is a good word from the South Island concerning Palermo, who figures at the minimum In tho Telegraph Handicap at Trentham. Palermo, who won at Wyndham, and on the second day at Invercargill, stood out as the only horse to win two sprint raoes, and also as the most promising young sprinter seen on the circuit. His record was two firsts, two seoonds, and onoo unplaced. Last season ho showed great promise In tho several hack races he won, and now has made a most successful debut In open company. He Is by Solferino from Lady Pal.; Lady’s Quex’s next appearance will be in the Taranaki Stakes next month. The Feilding and Palmerston North Stakes are already to the credit of the brilliant Lord Quex mare this season. During the holiday carnival, at three galloping and three trotting meetings on the West Coast - (South Island) £75,386 went through the totalisator, a decrease of £11,530 compared with last season’s figures.
