PEDIGREE LINEB. THE DISTAFF SIDE. } Most of to-day’s so-called *‘sports’b are concerned only with the winning form of the horses they go to see race or back away from the course. There are still some, however, who like to i know how successful racers are ‘come,’ so the following Is worth reprinting from a Christchurch exchange. Ammon Ra, who promises to be the leading two-year-old of the season, . descends through Sylvia from the Touchstone mare Juliet, who was probably the best mare of the line , that ever came to the 'colonies. In j I foal to Stockwell, she was imported to - Victoria by Mr C. B. Fisher in J 1860;iand in 1864, to Fisherman, who cost .Mrs Fisher 3000gns, she produced Sylvia. Sylvia, purchased by the Auckland Stud Company, came to , New Zealand ;in the late '7o’s ’and, j after foaling Martini-Henry and Wood Nymph to. Musket, . produced . to the same sire Elfin, who was the only one of her fillies to remain in New Zealand, and has. been principally responsible- for the continuance of the female line here. Elfin was put to her almost brother in blood, Nordenfeldt, who was a grandson by Musket of Juliet’s Stockwell daughter, Chrysolite, and the union resulted in Elflock, who proved a good brood mare. Elflock, who was owned by the Hon. J. D. Ormond, was in her 21st year when ■ she was mated with Sir Lancelot, a quality liver-chestnut son of Dreadnought, and she foaled Witchet—thus closely inbred to Musket, Fisherman, and Juliet; and possessing four strains of 'Stockwell. - Witchet was stinted at the “Karamu” stud to the magnificent Birkenhead, who came in Stockwell’s : male descent, but otherwise was a complete outeross, and two 1 successful daughters resulted from the unions, Straga and Bewitch. Bewitch- went to Australia, but Straga has carried on the line and earned special fame as the dam of Hymestra, Torfrida, and Hyades, • all by Hymettus, whp was of Stockwell’s sire line, but was also, in other respects, a complete outeross. Hyades had already given us two good winners in Phaola and Prodice, and her latest offspring to Limond, another outeross; is Ammon Ra. fX
