Buchanan, chairman of the Matamata Town Board convened a ’meeting of those interested in the formation of an Unemployment Committee for the district. Representatives of the following attended: Matamata Town Board, the Matamata branch of the Farmers’ Union, the Chamber ot Commerce, the clergy, Returned Soldiers’ Association, Power Board, Rugby Union and various employers. After the chairman had explained the position a local committee comprising all those in attendance was set up with power to add. Mr J. Buchanan was elected chairman, and Mr D. V. There are at present ten registrations at the local Post Office. : EXTENSION OF TIME. - UNEMPLOYMENT No. 2 SCHEME. WELLINGTON, Friday. The original announcement of No. 2 scheme of the Unemployment Board stipulated that the commitments had to be made by December 31 and the work finished by January 31, but the board has extended the closing date of the commitments to January 31, and is makihg further allocations to committees which ;have spent their first allotment and are able to provide further work. For country work it Is stipulated that It must be developmental and not ordinary farm work, for which labour would be engaged In any case.

A total of 12,230 unemployed was registered at the Labour Bureaux throughout New Zealand for the week ended January 12; an increase of 3527 over the previous week and a record. The Government is to proceed immediately with the work of completing the Whakatane-Galatea Road. It is stated that about 100 men, who are unemployed as a result of the construction work on the/ East Coast Railway line ceasing in the Gisborne

district will be engaged on the formation of the Galatea Road. It is stated that the Government has secured an option to purchase an estate of 22,000 acres of improved land at Galatea for closer settlement purposes. FURTHER RELIEF REQUESTED. TE AROHA - FUNDS EXHAUSTED. (Special to Times.) TE AROHA, Friday. A sum of £2lO has been spent on the relief of unemployment at Te Aroha, since the formation of the Unemployment Board. There are.ss registrations locally, for whom there is no money and no work. In addition many men from other centres pass through the main street daily. They are entirely without means of sustenance and all that can be done in this direction is to supply them with a meal and direct them to the next town. The Mayor, Mr R.
