MUNICIPAL ELECTIONS.
RESULTS IN ENGLAND. BIG CONSERVATIVE GAINS. "" SOME LABOUR REVERSES. United Press Assn. —Elec. Tel. Copyright. LONDON, Nov. 2. In the polling at the municipal elections in 300 cities and boroughs in England and Wales, the latest results from 83 councils show the following results: — Gains Losses Conservatives .... At Hull Labour formerly had a majority of four, and now is in a minority of five. At Leeds the Conservatives now have a majority on the council, instead of Labour. At Liverpool the Conservatives gained six seats from Labour. At Manchester there were five Conservative gains, two from Labour, two from the Liberals, and one. from the Independents. At Birkenhead there were three Conservative gains from Labour and at Salford four Conservative gains from Labour and one Liberal gain from Labour. At Cardiff the four Labour leaders were defeated including Mr Peter Freeman, M.P. At Ipswich the Conservatives won six seats in the wards and also one from Labour. At Leicester < there were three Conservative gains, and in Blackburn four gains from Labour. Special interest attached to the municipal elections in view of the political situation. They were also the first since the boards of guardians were abolished and the care of the poor handed over to the councils through the public assistance committees. Labour made greater efforts than ever to secure control, in order to give more generous relief. The results are necessarily incomplete. The largest Labour losses are in Sheffield, Plymouth, Salford, -Cardiff, Birmingham, Blackburn, Liverpool and Leeds. Last year the gains and losses showed:
The Daily Herald describes the results as disappointing- but not surprising. It would have been miraculous if sooner or later, the pendulum which was swinging to a 'Labour victory year after year did not momentarily swing back to the Tories and Liberals.
