The vital statistics for Cambridge for October, together with those for the corresponding period of last year are:—Births, 1930, 8; 1929, 18; deaths, 2 (6); marriages, 3 (3). A Dunedin firm has tendered for the Samoan banana output for 1931. Its object in so tendering is an endeavour to persuade the Government to arrange the Maui Pomare’s itinerary to include Dunedin on every trip from the Islands. The song of the nightingale was heard by Mr C. Wolstencrost at his home at Remuera, on Saturday night .and last evening. Mr Wolstencrost, who recently came from England, said the only other time he had heard the nightingale in New Zealand was at Invercargill last January. A grave more than 2500 years old has been opened at Georgenswalde, one of the most beautiful resorts on the East Prussian coast- It was found to possess an interior architecture that is so far unequalled by any similar find in East Prussia. This unique monument of prehistoric days is being completely restored, and is to be made accessible to the public when this work is completed, but without the layer of earth that originally covered it. Ten other prehistoric graves are to be preserved in similar manner after scientific investigation, so that in addition to its other famous sights, East Prussia will be able to bast the first prehistoric open-air museum in the world.

A baby hippopotamus was born at ■ the Auckland Zoological Park in the early hours of yesterday morning. Unfortunately, it died within five hours of birth owing to neglect on' the part of the mother. Its loss has caused great disappointment to the zoo officials, who had taken elaborate precautions to care for it.

A suggestion that producers are not getting an adequate return for the levies paid to the Dairy Produce Board and Meat Producers’ Board is made by the president of the Auckland Chamber of Commerce, Mr Malcolm Stewart, in the latest issue of the chamber’s journal. Mr Stewart considers that it would be advantageous If no levies were made this year.

The girls’ Flock House establishment, , which has been conducted by the New Zealand sheepowners’ acknowledgment of debt to British seamen fund for a number of years, is to be closed and the property disposed of. In making this announcement the trustees report that 128 girls have been brought to New Zealand under the benefits of the fund, in addition to 575 boys.

Twenty permits for buildings valued at £4385 were issued in the Hamilton Borough last month, compared. with 30 permits at £27,925 in October, 1929. The latter figure includes £IB,OOO, the estimated cost of the biulding proposed for the late Mr L. W. W. Brown, which was not proceeded with.

Hamilton’s youth, will celebrate the time-honoured festival of Guy Fawkes on Wednesday. Large stocks of fireworks are expected to be cleared by local dealers as the occasion will be the last before the Government regulations come into force. On and after November 5,- 1931, licenses will have to be obtained for the setting off of fireworks.

Sir John Foster Fraser, traveller and lecturer, addressed the All Peoples’ Society on the promotion of international friendship. He said the only Great War country where British soldiers were fully appreciated was Germany. The speaker said he had visited all the Allied countries, and everywhere he had heard depreciation of Britain and the cruellest slanders of British soldiers.
