BOWLING AND CROQUET.

THE WHITIORA CLUBS. SEASON OFFICINAL OPENED. Brilliant sunshine favoured the ofll■A dial opening of the Whitiora Bowling -* and CroquetvClubs’ season this after- % noon, and a large gathering of players ip enjoyed the inaugural games on tlie greens. Mrs Turbott, president of the Croquet Club, welcomed the ladies to the greens, and expressed pleasure at see- <-• ing so many present from the sur- ' rounding district. Such gatherings as this, she contended, did much to cement fellowship between the various clubs. The Whitiora Croquet Club was much indebted to the Bowling Club for the many improvements to L greens and buildings that had been carried out from lime to time in the a nineteen years of the club’s existence, p She then called on the first president of the Croquet Club, Mr W. F. Mason, to say a few words. Mr Mason said that the spirit of giving had played an important part in the progress of the Bowling Club, and now the ladies were following the example of the bowlers. It was his privilege to hand over to the Croquet Club three presentations, an honours . board given by Mrs Turbott, the president, a championship honours board from Mrs Kibblewhite, and an A and B section board presented by the secretary, Mrs Ibbotson. In asking the president to accept these he expressed ;= the hope that the club would enjoy a successful season. i; Mr Mason then made the first hoop, ; and, in so doing, declared the season to be officially opened. The guests then assembled in front of the pavilion, where the president of the Bowling Club, Mr W. W. Dilli- ' car, extended a welcome on behalf of the bowlers. He mentioned that among those present were members of the Epsom, Huntly, Ngaruawahia, Taupiri, - Hamilton East, Claudelands, Railway, Frankton, Hamilton, Glen Massey, Matarnata, and Rotorua Clubs. Mr Dillicar mentioned that as a finale to the opening ceremony a serial evening is to he held in the Whitiora pavilion to-night, and all bowlers and croquet players are invited to be present. Mr R. N. Pilkington also spoke, and wished the. club a successful season. After an official photograph had been taken, Mrs Turbott, president of the Croquet Club, sent down the first kitty. The rest of the afternoon was devoted to play.
