Observant people in the Old Country have come to the conclusion that the people who drive motor vehicles regularly are developing a definite “ motor face.” The exacting call upon a driver’s nervous energy when handling a motor-car or commercial vehicle in modern traffic conditions, they say, produces a strained and immobile expression, with the nose rigidly pointed ahead, the eyes steady tout keenly alert and .slightly protruding, and able to take in a wide angle with a minimum movement of the eyeballs, and associated in extreme cases with a permanent crouch attitude of startled attention. Private chauffeurs, it has been noticed, grow thinner every year, with “ poker ” faces ” and a frozen superciliousness never more obvious than when they overtake and pass the owner of a car sauntering along at a modest 35 miles per hour. There have been no marked indications of the definite development of the “ motor face ” in New Zealand, though there are some grounds for believing that the look of superciliousness or smug complacency on the faces of drivers overtaking cars has been sometimes in evidence.
