The spring meeting of the Auckland Trotting Club was opened to-day on the club’s course, Alexandra Park, Epsom, in fine but threatening weather before a good attendance. Hughes, Longburn. ■ The Hamilton-owned and Tama- ’ here-trained Royal Triumph commanded major attention, going out with £535 on his chances, the next in demand being Ben Bingen (£322), and Windchat (£306), Caballero, who returned close on double figures, ber ing sixth fancy with £129. Royal Triumph went off in the lead, followed by Zanzibar, All Special, Lady Ena, and Caballero. Royal Triumph broke along the back, but quickly regained lost ground, and passing the stands was again in front followed by Zanzibar, Lady Ena and Caballero, with a good gap back Ben Bingen. Zanzibar-and Lady Ena were the pilots along the back, followed by Royal Triumph, Caballero, and Ben Bingen. Zanzibar and Royal Triumph turned for home practically on terms, followed by Caballero; who was a good half-dozen ■lengths Away, with Lady Ena, Ben Bingen and Peter Eyre in that order. Zanzibar and Royal Triumph tired |quickly in Hie last 100 yards, and .Caballero came through fast to get the verdict by half a length from Zanzibar, who was a neck in iront of Royal Triumph. Ben Bingen was fourth, followed by Peter Eyre, Lady Ena, and tyirect Action. Times: 3.49 1-5, 3.49 2-5, 3.-49 3-5. . Caballero finished particularly well, handling the going-in good style. Zanzibar tired quickly in the very closing stages, but his showing was a good one, nevertheless. Royal Triumph was unlucky to lose ground through breaking, otherwise he would have been very hard to beat. Ben Bingen shaped well for three-parts of the journey, but he broke going up the back the last time. None of -the others impressed. MOUNT EDEN HANDICAP. Winner trained by J. T. Paul, Mangere. , Kewpie’s Guy was favoured with £Bl3 from Prince Pedro (£672) and Lady Yvonne (£382). Whakahihi, who was paying double figures to win, was ninth choice with £64.. Prince Pedro broke up at- the start. Oliver Thorpe led early from A 1 John, Windshield, Lord Lou, and Whakahihi. Going up the back the last lime the order was Windshield, Whakahihi, Lord Lou, Great Vanity, Carnui, and Queen’s Bond. Windshield and Whakahihi were together turning for home, where Kewpie’s Guy was heading Great Vanity and Carnui. Kewpie’s Guy won by three-quarters of a length from Whakahihi, who was a similar distance in front of Queen’s Bond. Windshield was fourth, and then came Carnui, A 1 John, Oliver Thorpe, and Great Vanity. Times: 3.1 4-5, 3.4 l-o, 3.3 3-o. The winner did her work nicely, and is sure to he improved by the race. Whakahihi was. in the picture throughout the journey, and his showing was a good one. Queen’s Bond’s effort was good without the Worthy Bond mare having the best ol' the running. At John is sure to be the better for the race. Prince'Pedro lost his chance by failing to begin well.

Great Peler was most in demand with £866 10s from the Stanmoor — Jewel Pointer bracket (£786 . 10s) and Logan’s Pride (£514), Mountain Dell being fifth fancy with £4Ol 10s. Mountain Dell took charge showing the way over the opening to Warplane, Stanmoor, Genuine, Evelyn Locanda, Logan's Pride, Great Delight, Florent, Great Peter, Sunshower, Reremai and Jewel Pointer. up the back the last time, Mountain Dell was still the pilot, being attended by Warplane, Stanmoor, Logan’s Pride, Genuine, Floraline and Great Peter. Mountain Dell led into the straight from Great Peter, Warplane and Logan’s Pride- In the run to the judge, Mountain Dell did best to win by three lengths from Great Peter, who was two and a-half lengths in front of Warplane. Logan’s Pride was fourth with Sun-shower, Stanmoor, Genuine and Jewel Pointer in that order. Times, 4.44 1-5, 4.44 3-5, 4.46 3-5. The winner who handled the going in good style began well and never made a mistake on the trip. Great Peter was slow to hit his straps and his passage in the early stages was not altogether a smooth one. He threw out a strong challenge over the last round but the winner had too big a break on him, although the -margin should have been closer. Warplane went a good race, while Logan’s Pride had tired over the concluding stages. Stanmoor had every -show but stopped more quickly than was anticipated in the going. ONEHUNGA HANDICAP. Te Wahia won by half-a-length from Hal Chimes, who was a head in front of Explosion. Zella was fourth, with Purser, Brutus and Stoney next. Times: 4.48 1-5, 4.45 3-5, 4.48 4-5. . Te- Wahia was in a handy position throughout the trip and the Tamahere candidate finished well. Hal Chimes made up his ground quickly, but just tailed to see it out. Paradigm was backed down inside evens with £1247 10s from Gold Sovereign (£677), Sebisca (£50,4 10s) and Etta Cole (£448 10s). Paradigm was in charge when they settled down followed by Anseline, Sebisca and Floraline. Going past the stands before entering on the last round, Paradigm and Sebisca were together and then came Gold Sovereign, Anseline, Tloraline and Etta Cole. Paradigm led the way into the straight from Etta Cole. Sebisca and Gold Sovereign. Paradigm saw the journey out to win by a length from Etta Cole, who was five lengths in- front of Sebisca. Anseline was fourth and then came Floraline, Goid Sovereign and Tiger Salve. Times, 4.52, 4.56 2-5, 4.55 1-5. j Paradigm won easily. Etla Cole was a little slow to settle down to do her best, but she made -a good showing and is sure to be a lot better for the race. Sebisca was in it until the final pressure. Gold Sovereign was a little disappointing, while Anseline is on the improve.
