NEW WATER TOWER.

INSPECTED BY ENGINEERS. “A VERY SAFE DESIGN.” Intense interest in the Hamilton waterworks scheme was manifested by a party of about 20 members of the Auckland branch of the New Zealand Society of Civil Engineers yesterday afternoon.

The party, which was in charge of Mr D. Holderness, engineer to the Auckland Harbour Board, visited the coal carbonisation works at Rotowaro before coming to Hamilton, where they spent the night. This morning they left for Arapuni.

The day Ahifhn.had just completed work at the water tower when the engineers arrived. They made a thorough inspection of the tank in company with the Mayor, Mr J. R. Fow, and the borough engineer, Mr H. Worley. The electric arc welding process, which is used in the erection of the steel walls of the tank, was the source of much comment. The walls have now reached a height; of about 20 feet, but cannot yet be seen above the Ruakiwi Street Hill on the town side.

Several of the engineers expressed the view afterwards that the tower was a very safe design and no risks of any kind appeared to have been, taken in its construction. It was also stated that the arc welding method raised some novel engineering problems.' The party later motored to the pumping station, where they were greatly impressed with the arrangement and compactness of the new installation.

At the conclusion of the inspection Mr Holderness, on behalf of the party briefly voiced appreciation to the Mayor and borough engineer for providing the opportunty and facilities for viewing the waterworks.
