FAITH IN PRESSMEN.
ALLOWED TO REMAIN. THROUGH COMMITTEE BUSINESS. Canterbury (New South Wales) Council decided to hold its committee meetings behind closed doors, excluding the public but allowing the Press to enter. The Mayor (Alderman- Bramston) said experience had shown him that consideration of many financial matters in public stilled debate. For fear of the legal consequences aidermen frequently kept information of interest to the council to themselves. Besides, the financial affairs of different ratepayers had to be discussed from time to time. The Press representatives could be trusted to keep information of that character to themselves.
