NECESSARY FOOTPATH

RELIEF FOR TE RAPA. WAIPA COUNTY’S DECISION. A DANGEROUS STRETCH. It has been decided to construct a temporary footpath on the Te Rapa side of No. 1 Bridge for a distance of 45 chains, five chains beyond the Forest Lake corner. This decision was reached at the meeting of the Waipa County Council following a report of the proceedings of a special meeting called recently at Te Rapa to decide on the necessary steps to be taken to prevent a continuation of accidents to pedestrians in the locality. A copy of the report of the proceedings was forwarded by Mr W. McCaw as follows: The meeting decided that the two main causes of the accidents and fatalities which had recently occurred were attributable to the speeding of motorists, and to the fact that the road, in its present state, was quite unsuitable for pedestrians or for cyclists. The following resolutions were passed: “ (1) That we ask the cooperation of the Hamilton Borough Council, the Waipa County Council and the Automobile Association to determine a speed limit' between Mill Street and Sunshine Avenue; (2) That this meeting invite the Hamilton Borough Council and the Waipa County Council to consider the matter of Whitiora approach and adjacent approaches and also the construction of a second approach to the borough via Ulster Street; (3) That the Waipa County Council be urged, in the interest of school children and pedestrians to consider the necessity of constructing footpaths from Whitiora Bridge to Sunshine Avenue; (4) That .the Highways Board be requested to proceed with the construction of the road from Hamilton to Ngaruawahia with all possible speed, such work to be commenced at the Hamilton end.” Mr McCaw stated that the general feeling of the meeting seemed to be that w'hile all the resolutions were exceedingly important and deserved the earliest consideration, nevertheless the most important matter at present was the construction of footpaths. Since the meeting Mr McCaw had notified that a canvass had been made of the locality whose residents would benefit by the construction of the footpaths. He had in hand £3l towards the work. On receiving an assurance from the council that the footpaths will be put under way immediately the sum referred to will be forwarded to the Council. In addition to the donations, Mr J. W. Alker has generously offered to supply and spread free of charge all the sand necessary for a -path four feet wide from No. 1 Bridge to Forest Lake Road corner.' Several other suggestions for consideration of the Council are contained in the correspondence. Authority Given. It was considered that the first 45 chains from No. 1 Bridge should be put in hand. The path, however, could only be of a temporary nature, as the road would have to be reformed in the near future. The offer of the residents in the locality of financial assistance to construct the temporary path was accepted and authority given to the riding member, Mr T. Church, and the engineer to take steps for the construction of the path.
