Maniapoto are the present holders of the cup, and the first challenge came from the Ngaiterangi tribe, Bay of Plenty. Talkies for Otorohanga. At a special meeting of the Town Board Commissioners, the matter of tho installation of the talkies in the local Municipal Theatre was discussed. It was decided to take a postal vote of the ratepayers on the issue whether the municipality will run its own talkies, or let the hall for this purpose. Druids’ Lodge. There was a large gathering of brethren at Otorohanga, when the above lodge met for the half-yearly election of officers. The election resulted (District President Bro. Martin being the installing officer) : —Bro. W. M. Cowley, J.P.A.; Bro. Cullum, A.D.; H. Perry, V.A.; T. McCready, 1.G.; B. Gorrie, OG; V. L. Fairbrother, secretary; H. W. Atkinson, treasurer; Bros. G. Lawrence and J. Sandison, A.D.B.’s; Bros. M. Cowley and R. Burrell, V.A.B.’s; auditors, J. Trapski and C. Cummum. Root and Fodder Crops. Mr J. J. Walker, a prominent dairyman of the Waipa River Road, almost swept the board in the recent fodder and root crops competitions held annually under the auspices of the Otorohanga Agricultural and Pastoral Association. Mr Walker won outright the first prizes for carrots, chou moellier, and ensilage, whilst he was a closo third for mangolds. Mr Walker stated that he had made no special preparation in order that his crops might become prize-winners. He merely followed the usual farming practices in .general vogue throughout the dairying lands of the district. Importation of Jerseys. During recent years the herdsmen of the Northern King Country have been prominent buyers of high grade producers from the famous old-estab-lished Jersey herds of the Dominion. During five sales of such, in and around New Plymouth, and five held further south (in Taranaki), Ot.orolianga district buyers secured no fewer than 87 superfine bred cattle, the bulk of which reached the Otorohanga trucking yards last week. Messrs T. and A. Smith, of Whawharua, secured the cow ,Oaklands Nettle, by the imported bull Wolton Bed Buoy Charity Sweet, for 352Jg5., which constituted a record price for the Taranaki sales last w r eek. Mr F. 0. R. Phillips, of Meadowland (Otorohanga), purchased 50 head, constituting himself the most generous buyer at the series of sales. T. and A. Smith (Whawharua) secured 16 head; Mrs Cherry. (Kio Kio), 2; Mr A. W. Hood (Otorohanga), 2; and various other fanciers secured single animals.

This heavy buying of the very best Jersey blood in famed Taranaki stresses the point made by local breeders that before many more seasons have passed the Otorohanga district will oust the southern province from its place as the home of the best Jersey dairy cattle.
