NEARLY A TRAGEDY.
CRASH AT NEWSTEAD
BUS COLLIDES WITH TRAIN.
DRIVER’S PRESENCE OF MIND,
Another level crossing tragedy was nearly recorded at Newstead about 7 o’clock on Saturday evening, when the Kiwi bus owned by Mr A. L. A. Dent, of Te Aroha, travelling from Hamilton to Te Aroha, collided with a train which left Cambridge at 6 p.m. It is stated that the approaching train was hidden from the bus driver by the Newstead Hall, while visibility was made bad by the lights of an approaching car. Acting with extreme promptitude, the driver jammed on the brakes in time to prevent a terrific smash. The bus struck the train, slewed around sideways, and plunged into a low ditch, but fortunately did not capsize. , Damage was confined to a wrecked radiator and smashed windscreen.
Mr D. Wright, of Hamilton, a member of the Marist football team, was thrown heavily- inside the bus and injured his shoulder slightly, while one of the women suffered from shock. So far as can be ascertained nobody else was any the worse for the alarming experience.
