ARAPUN! WORK.

THE EARTH MOVEMENTS,

EXTENSION OF FAULT. LOWERING OF THE LAKE. The unw-atering of the headrace al Arapuni has disclosed the fact that the earth movement actually extended into the bed of the headrace above the spillway weir. The fracture has been traced for six or seven chains up ‘the headrace channel from a ppint near the junction of the penstock ' intake structure and the weir.

The ‘fault is apparently an extension of that discovered a week ago. Varying in width from one to two inches, it runs for about two chains along the rock at the foot of the penstocks and gradually diminishes until it is lost three chains along the bed 'of the headrace channel. There is, no trace of it beyond this point. Since the w-ater has been emptied from the headrace, the - leak on the bank above the power house has ceased to Except for a few shallow pools, the headrace is now completely dry. The lowering of the lake is proceeding -steadily. It is estimated that to day, half the volume will have been released, although the depth will have been reduced by only 23ft. i __ YESTERDAY’S EXCURSION. VISITORS DISAPPOINTED.

Several hundred people travelled to Arapuni yesterday. A special train took-150 people from Auckland and a large number of passengers from stations en route, while buses from Hamilton and Rotorua and innumerable private cars added, their quota. The eastern banks above the gorge and the road across the dam were thronged all the afternoon, but the regulations prohibiting access, to the works were rigidly enforced. Officials were stationed at the gate to the swing-bridge, and the entrance on the west side -of the dams was again blocked. At this point the barriers had been shifted back several chains, debarring sightseers from obtaining a direct view of the outlet to the diversion tunnel. Keen disappointment that they were unable to secure a close view of the works w-as expressed by several visitors upon their return to Auckland last evening.
