MAORI HEAVILY FINED.
SERIES OF OFFENCES. MAGISTRATE’S STRONG COMMENT. (By Telegraph.—Press Association.) • WANGANUI, Monday. Jerry Ilokopaura, a Maori, was fined- £25 for being in a state of intoxication while in charge of a motor car, which was involved in an accident at Maxwell on April 15; £lO for negligent driving; and £5 for offensive language. The Magistrate, Mr Salmon, S.M., also cancelled his license, which is not to be renewed for three years, f The Magistrate said that defendant’s statement that he had had no liquor that day only as a medicine for his heart was gross perjury. He instructed the police to make further Investigations regarding his consumption of liquor that day, and to proceed further if necessary.
