NEW ZEALAND POLITICS

STATEMENT BY MINISTER. EXTRA TAXATION INEVITABLE. <By Telegraph—prps? Association.) MASTERTON, Sunday.

Speaking at Mastcrton yesterday the Minister of Lands, Hon. E. A. Ransom, said lie did not think the minority Government was badly placed to deal with the serious financial and other problems now raised, it must bring down sound legislative proposals, because it could not hope otherwise to get the support of the majority in the House. Extra taxation was Inevitable. The Cabinet would bring down proposals it considered to be demanded in the interests of the country and regardless of the effect on the fortunes of its own party. The Minister said present unemployment relief works were opening up new areas for settlement, and more could be done on these lines. The permanent remedy for unemployment was to bring idle or partly-used lands into full use and occupation.
