WALTON SETTLERS.
RAILWAYS CRITICISED.
CONNECTION WITH HAMILTON.
A i meeting of settlers was convened at Walton by Mr 11. R. J. Southee, to urge the Railway Depart.-mefi-t. to give.. a better service from Walton to Hamilton. Mr Southee presided and there was a fair attendance.
Mr Southee said, there was practically no passanger service between Walton and Hamilton at present. The department had been changing the service from time to time, and the result was that Walton seemed to receive no consideration whatever. The department should give Walton a reasonable service to the central town. Mr Harris endorsed what Mr Southee had said, and moved: “That Mr Clinkard, M.P., and the District Traffic Manager be requested to meet the settlers at Walton, with a view to obtaining a better service for the Walton district. Mr C. Given, seconded the motion.
Mr Harris pointed outV.that 'the passenger service . on-. the - Rotorua line was most unsatisfactory, for Walton, and the settlers are not receiving any consideration from the department The express which." formerly served Walton had been discontinued/ which was a great hardship, on the settlers, who claim a right with other districts to-have a reasonable service.Mr Harris said that better accommodation at the-'po.st office is badly needed. The .sfettlers were J losing a good man because of the inadequate accommodation, •
'lt was decided .to bring this matter before; Mr Clinkard, M-P. It was also .arranged that. (Mr McLean, 'Walton hiding, member of the Piako County 'Council, be -written to inviting him to arrange- that he and the chairman of the council meet the settlers in -the township, with a view to having some improvements' cone to the footpaths and main street.
