ROYAL SHOW PENS. AWARDS AT SMITHFIELD. (From a Correspondent.) LONDON, April 10- • The New Zealand Meat Producers’ Board offered £l2O in prizes for pigs shown at the Royal Show at Invercargill. Half the money went to the winners when the animals were exhibited alive. The other half is to be distributed to the winners in a competition at Smithfleld. There were five lots of three in the porker class, and five lots of three in the baconer class. The carcases were shown on the stand of Messrs T. Borthwick and Son, Smithfleld, last week, and attracted a great deal of attention. The judges were three well-known experts selected by the Imported Meat Trade Association (Mr J. Spanjer, Mr R. T. Wilson, and Mr J. B. Swain). They reported as follows: — PORKERS. First Prize —No. 304 (Mr J. Ei- Galpin). These were outstanding in suitability for the London trade in size, quality and shape. Second Prize—No. 301 (Mr C. M. Williams). Very good selection. A trifle heavier. Also very suitable to the London market. Third Prize —No . 307 (Southland Frozen Meat Company). Very good pigs in their section, but being heavier there is necessarily a smaller demand-

BACONERS

First Prize —No. 298 (Southland Frozen Meat Company). Ideal weights. Quite good in length of loin and not too much shoulder, and quite thick streak, strictly in accordance with the other part of the carcase. Second Prize —No. 297 (Southland Frozen Meat Company). Equally good in all respects, except that the weight w'as a trifle heavier. Third Prize —No. 293 (Southland Frozen Meat Company). Weights good. In our opinon rather too short, and on the fat side. Also too heavy in coarse meat. The dressing of pork was good, but many of the pigs were badly scored, as they had evidently been fighting before being killed. It is interesting to note that the baconer lot which took first place in New Zealand on the hoof was not placed in Simthfleld; the second in New Zealand was first here; and the third in New Zealand was second here. In the porker class the first in New' Zealand was second at Smithfleld; third in New Zealand was first here; and the I second in New Zealand Was not placed.
