THE NEW LEADER.

As was expected, the Hon. G. W. Forbes has succeeded Sir Joseph Ward to the leadership of the United Party. Taking into consideration Mr Foribes’ experience as a parliamentarian, the appointment was the only logicaL one from the ranks of the United Party. Almost from the start of his political career the new leader has held position# of responsibility, although it was not until the present Parliament that he held official rank. Previously, however, he had aided Sir Joseph Ward in his first Premiership, and later led the remnants of the erstwhile Liberal Party. Dhring the life of the present House Mr Forbes has led the Government during the many months of his Premier’s absence- Thus he attains the highest rank in the Dominion Parliament supported by experience in leadership granted to few. < Mr Forbes comes to Power an expert in agricultural matters, and therefore pre-eminently fitted in one respect to undertake the futies of managing the affairs of what is pre-eminently an agricultural State. There are many who think that a vigorous “back to the land” policy would he the solution of New Zealand unemployment problems, -and the means of righting several of the drawbacks the country is now suffering from. The leadership of such a party as the United has' proved itself to-be is no enviable position, but Mr Forbes has now the opportunity to pursue a land policy which would in some measure make up for previous failings, and thus be of invaluable service to his country. He has now the opportunity to prove himself as an administrator, and while lt Is not to be expected that he can perform miracles, he should be given every chance and encouragement in his most difficult task.
