CHINA’S SHIPPING.

HAD A BAD YEAR. The year of 1929 was the most disastrous experience by Chinese-owned steamship companies since Chinese capital first ventuured into the modern shipping business, according to statistics compiled by the Sinwanpao, the largest Chinese daily newspaper published in Shanghai. Because of the frequent civil wars, always attended by blockading of the river and confiscation of the steamers by the Government, without compensation, most of the shipping companies suspended business in April. American, British, and Japanese river vessels, on the contrary, did not suffer these disabilities, because under extraterritorial protection they could not be confiscated by the Nanking Government for troops movements.
