INVASION BY LOCUSTS.

TERRIBLE PEST IN EGYPT. ONE COLUMN FIFTY MILES LONG. CAIRO, April 5. The locust invasion of Egypt is assuming alarming proportions. Heroic efforts to prevent the swarms from reaching the cultivations on this side of the Suez Canal have apparently failed. Defence lines have been pierced and quantities of locusts have reached the Suez road, some descending on King Fuad’s estates in Sharquia Province. The King visited the estates to-day and gave orders that no expense was to be spared in the campaign. All Government departments arebeing asked to co-operate, and the Minister of War is preparing to employ troops who will be equipped with flame-throwers. As an indication of the extent of the plague it may be mentioned that one. swarm recently seen in the desert was estimated to have been fifty miles in length*
