TE KOWHAI. * Farming Matters. The. plentiful rain of the last few days has greatly facilitated operations, as harrowing and top-dressing oan now proceed apace. Many farmers were short of water, as the windmills were useless, and hand-pumping was resorted to in many cases. A considerable number of cull cows have been forwarded to the Horotiu works under Mr. Lye’s scheme, and returns to hand from the earlier drives are said to be satisfactory. Weekly Euchre Parties. The weekly euchre games are poorly attended and it has been decided to hold them on Wednesday evenings instead of Saturday evenings. - The lady’s prize on the opening evening was won by Mrs. Jesson and the men’s prize by Mr. Handlling, and on Saturday by Mrs. G. Nicol and Mr.. Reg. Thomson respectively. Miss Weatherly supplied the music on both occasions. House Warming Party. . A large number of friends visited ! Mr. and Mrs. E. Harris at their home and spent a very enjoyable evening with various forms of entertainment. A beautiful billiard hall and table with all the modern equipment of the old game, provided the major attraction for the menfolk. Before dispersing Mr. G. A. Magner tendered the thanks of the guests for an enjoyable evening, and the assemblage sang “For They are Jolly Good Fellows.” W.E.A. Lectures. Large attendances continue at Mr. Stephen’s weekly lectures, and these fixtures are proving very instructive and entertaining. “ The League of Nations ” was the subject on Friday evening, and some forty eager students absorbed the good fare provided. The next lecture w r ill deal with “The Limitation of Armaments.” A number of pupils are attending from Whatawhata. GLEN MASSEY. Tho Weather. The glorious weather experienced for some time gave place to fairly steady rain on Thursday afternoon, while scattered showers continued till Spnday morning. The rain has been very 'beneficial to the pastures and gardens. Chdrch Services. There was a large congregation on Sunday afternoon at the Anglican service, which was conducted by the Rev. I Cleary, of Ngaruawahia. At the Meth- > odist service in the evening Mr G. 11. Westfield was the preacher. Football Match. On Saturday the Glen Massey footballers journeyed to Hunlly where they played, Huntly Thistle. The ground was very rough and against a good display of the game, a ragged match, with but few glimpses of good football, ending in a win for Thistle by four goals to one.

TE KAWA* Sports Society. The annual meeting of the Te Kawa Sports Society was held in the Town Hall. The following officers were elected for the ensuing year:—Patron, Mr W. J. Broadfoot, president, Mr J. Wallis; vice-presidents, Messrs S. G. Broadbent and A. A. Scholes; committee, Messrs R. Mexted, Burton, G. Mexted, McLean, T. Wallis, E. Campbell, Henderson, Thompson and Smart. Mr I. Plewman was re-elected secretary and treasurer. A unanimous vote of appreciation was accorded the secretary and treasurer for the efficient manner in which he had carried out his duties. Rabbit Board. A meeting of the Te Kawa Rabbit Board was held at the secretary’s (Mr J. G. Wynyard) office, when Mr S. G. Broadbent presided. After a lengthy discussion as to the manner of rating for the following year, business was adjourned until the board’s next meeting in July. Suppliers’ Meeting; \ The annual suppliers meeting of the New Zeaalnd Go-op.erative Dairy Company was held in the Te Kawa Hall. The meeting was addressed by Mr Young, one of the directors, and Mr Harvey, assistant-manager. The addresses were fully appreciated. The meeting closed with a hearty vote of thanks to the speakers. The following suppliers’ committee was elected: Messrs A. Stewart (convenor), 11. Henderson, F. Plewman, H. Harker and M. R. Ashton. Welcome Rain. Welcome rain fell over the whole district, effectively washing in the large amount of top-dressing which had been applied to the pastures.

ELSTOW-OTWAY. Dairying Matters. The New Zealand Co-operative Dairy Company paid out one shilling per lb. superfine 'butter-fat for March. I This is a very favourable price con- ! sidering that in some southern proj vinces pay-outs have been as low as six-pence per lb. butterfat. Many local herds are being milked only once daily, while quite a number of cows have j been dried off. Pastures are lacking j in growth, and it is well that there is an ample supply of preserved feed for the winter months. Dairy heifers coming to profit for the approaching season are selling well in spite of the slump in stock prices at present ruling. Some lines have been sold privately at 12gns. per head. A number of high-class Jersey heifers from Taranaki have been brought up . this way. Football. The draw for football teams to play last; Saturday resulted in Elstow play-, irig a match against Hot Springs Rain had made the ground heavy and the ball was slippery. It was a very interesting game, Elstow, scoring well, and winning by 19 points to 0.

Dental Cllnlo. The dental clinic nurse made' 'hei half-yearly visit to the school recently, and a number of little patients received dental treatment at the clinic rooms situated in Te Aroha school grounds. Free treatment is available at the above centre for tiny tots attending schools within a ten-mile radius. Application was made to the -clinic authorities for an assistant nurse, hut this request could not be acceded to by the Department. Nurse Tollerton is limited to 800 patients yearly. Euchre and Dance. In spite of the inclement weather tho Elstow Hall Society’s fortnightly euchre and dance drew a goodly crowd. The ladies’ euchre prize was won by Mrs Roulton, second honours going to Mrs Flowerday. Mr Earl won the men’s prize, second prize going to Mr Holmes. At the conclusion of the. Euchre tournament the committee handed round a very dainty supper, and dancing was continued till a late hour. Mrs Clover (piano) and Mr Crow (violin) supplied excellent dance music. Personal. Miss Maud Andrew is home from college for the holidays.Miss E. Baines, of Dannevirke, is the guest of Mrs Dale, Bowler’s Road. Mrs Peterson and Miss A. Peterson, - of Waitoa, are visiting Mrs Dale. Sickneas. A mild form of gastric influenza is prevalent in the district. The sickness is severe on little ones, while young people and adults are not immune. Haystaok Burned. A large haystack on Mr Saunder’s property, Ngutumunga Road was burned. It is surmised that spontaneous combustion caused the loss. TE PUNINGA. Farming as a Career. Mr. D. F. Campbell gave an address on the above subject at the Debating and Literary Society’s meeting, which was held in the Te Puninga school. There was a record attendance, the school being crowded. Mr. D. R. F. Campbell, formerly headmaster of the Morrinsville District High School, outlined his scheme for settling young men on farms where they could make as good a living as those who entered town occupations. Numerous questions from farmers in the audience were answered by Mr Campbell. On the motion of the'chairman, Mr. H. Skiffington, a hearty vote of thanks to Mr. Campbell was carried by acclamation. NGAHINAPOURI. Golf. Despite the wet weather there was quite a gathering on the links on Saturday and some interesting games were played. There is quite an improvement in the links, and each week should see them better still. Hockey. On Saturday the Ngahinapouri boys’ hockey team were defeated by Hinemoa at Steele Park, in an even and .exciting game. The final score was 2 to 1 in favour of Hinemoa. The Weather.
