In the House of Commons Mr Neville Chamberlain (Conservative, Egbaston, Birmingham), initiated a debate on unemployment. He emphasised the seriousness of the situation and said he did not ask the Government to adopt safeguarding, but asked for a declaration that there would be no further interference with existing duties for a term of years. Hon. J. 11. Thomas, Minister in charge of unemployment said the problem of unemployment could never be solved by any government unless that government could carry with it the hearty co-operation of the workers. He admitted that unemployment was growing worse and would probably greatly increase' in the immediate future.
