AUSTRALIA V. M.C.C.

M.C.C. MAKE 258.

FAIRFAX TAKES 6 FOR 54. AUSTRALIA 23 FOR TWO IN SECOND United Press Assn.—Elec. Tel. Copyright. (Received May 20, 8.45 a.m.) LONDON, May 19. The M.C.C. innings closed for 258 runs. At the drawing of stumps Australia had lost two wickets for 23 runs in the second innings. (Received May 20, 9.20 a.m.) LONDON, May 19. After the M.C-C. had scored ,50 runs in 55 minutes Grimmett was given the ball. The lively pitch served to suit Hornibrook, but Duleepsinhji and Hendren used their feet well, scoring at a good rate. Splendid fielding then kept down the runs. Duleepsinhji reached his 50 in 80 minutes. Fairfax came on and had another suocess in his first over, Hendren giving Woodfull an easy catch in the slips. , Twelve thousand spectators were present after lunch, and saw a quiet half hour’s play. Fairfax continued to bowl well, and Richardson and Bradman were applauded frequently for good, fielding. With an extra fast ball Wall dismissed Jardine after a dull innings. Walker Stumps Duleepsinhji. When Duleepsinhji seemed certain of his century he played forward to Hornibrook. The hall turned, and Walker achieved another fine stumping feat. Duleepsinhji had given a delightful, display, with never a semblance of a chance. He hit eight fours.

A Good Scorer,

Wall was now bowling much faster and sent Chapman’s middle stump flying. , Two hundred appeared after 220 minutes, M.C.C. thus being the first side to score 200 against the Australians on the present tour. Stevens batted soundly, scoring all round tfye wicket. Fairfax’s Success. Fairfax changed ends, and immediately bowled Allen and Stevens, after a valuable innings, was caught at cover. Fairfax got his fifth wicket when a slow yorker deceived Kennedy. Altogether, Fairfax bowled 31 overs, including five maidens. Visitors’ Second Strike. Woodfull'and Jackson opened Australia’s second innings at 5-45, in a gloomy light. They made another disastrous start, Woodfull playing a ball on after a narrow escape from being run out. Bradman also gave a chance before he put his leg in front of a straight one. Jackson held up his wicket for 45 minutes against good bowling. Details of the scores are:— M.C.C. —First Innings. CHAPMAN’S LEADERSHIP. GOAfAf ENDED BY AIR WARNER. United Press Assn. —Elec. Tel. Copyright. LONDON, Alay 18. Mr P. F. Warner, writing In the Alorning Post, says a great factor in the success of the M.C.C. team on Saturday was Chapman’s admirable leadership. lie managed the attack most skilfully. England’s bowling generally confirmed the opinion that there has been a big improvement in that direction. The Australians’ score does not represent the potential value of their bat-' ting. The men arc not accustomed to the differing wickets in England, hut at the moment there is a definite tail.
