COMMERCIAL.
LONDON MARKETS. WELLINGTON, Monday. The Department of Agriculture has received the following cablegram, dated May 17, from the High Commissioner for New Zealand in London: Tallow.—No auction this week. .Business is quiet and no change in prices. Hemp.—Manila: The market, after a tendency upward, has again declined and continues dull, with a slow demand. “J ’’ grade, May-July shipment sold at £26. Output from January Ito May 10, 569,000 bales, as against 660,000 bales'for the same period last year. Stocks in England on April 30, 10,762 hales, as against 8535 bales at the same time last year. Sisal: Market easier and a tendency to decline. May-July Shipment fair average quality No. 1 sold at £29 ss; No. 2, £2B; good.' marks .nominally 10s more. New Zealand: Market dull, without interest to buyers. Business has been done on spot, Antwerp, at high fair, £29, and fair, £26 10s, purchase being against old contract.
Fruit. —The Matakana is now clear. Cox’s Orange made 16s to 22s a case; Delicious and Jonathan, 13s to 15s; Dunn’s Favourite and Lord Wolseley, 10s to 11s. The Port Caroline is discharging fruit in good condition.except some immature Sturmers. The Northumberland has arrived.
Linseed.—Market firm and. advancing sellers now quote May-June shipment, Calcutta, at £l9; Bombay, £l9 15s; Plate, £l7 16s 3d.
