WAIKATO COMPETITIONS. GAMES IN HAMILTON. RESULTS IN ALL GRADES. The games in the Waikato' Hockey Association’s competitions were continued, on . Saturday. .The results were:— Senior. Hinemoa 4 v. Cambridge 2. Old Boys 13 v. United 1. N Junior. Y.M.C.A. 4 v. Old Boys 1. Kaipaki 9 v. High School 0. Hinemoa 2 v. ’Pouri 1. SENIOR CONTESTS. OLD BOYS BIG WIN. UNITED A SHORT SIDE. Old Boys met United in an encounter at Steele Park, the game resulting practically, in a walk over for the Reds. The teams were:— Old Boys.—M. West, C. Haverbier, T. Jane, M.. Hume, J. Davies, K. Wycherley,. K. Hammond, E. MacLachlan, F. Craig, R. Hampton, N. Riddley. United. —Smillie, Roy, Waterson, McDonagh, V. Woods, Alsopp, Davis, Carter. United ‘ were short, playing only eight men for the greater part of the game, and nine for the balance. The forward play of the Old Boys was too well organised for United to withstand, the latter’s defence being largely on the shoulders of Alsopp, McDonagh, Waterson and Roy, not forgetting the goalie, Smillie, who had a gruelling time throughout and did excellent work despite the size of the score against him. , The Old Boys' backs were never seriously troubled and the Red halves did well. Davis, i at centre-half,, would have done better had he kept a little further away from the forwards. Ilume was hurt early in the game and this affected his later play. Riddley, on the Red right wing, played a' great game and was never missing when the bail came his way, while Craig, Hammond and MeLachlan settled down well and maintained excellent pace throughout, although Hammond had a tendency for offside. j • The Play. Old Boys started with a great forward rush and secured three goals before the game had really got going, the scorers being McLachlan, Wycherley and J. Davis, the scoring being left: to- the half line owing to failure of the inside forwards. From a breakaway Alsopp put in a great run and beat West, who never saw the ball. Old Boys rallied and the forwards combining better they kept play mostly in the United territory. Hammond, McLachlan (2), and Davis scored, in quick succession. Halftime came with the score— * Old Boys 7 United 1 The second half opened with Old Boys surging around the United goal, where Smillie was again tested severely. He seemed all the time to be the centre of turmoil and his short play saved his side many times. He was called upon to do more than his share of the defence. McDonagh was doing good work and Roy, while pretty certain on his stroke, was, if anything, a little 100 speculative. Waterson made several good saves behind the goalie even though his frequent infringements for back-stick play passed unnoticed by the referee. At this stage Goodwin joined United, but his presence did not serve to even up the disadvantage. Haverbier put on another point for Old Boys.

Goals Go On. Hammond was responsible for many of the Red forward rushes, but he was well supported and he quickly placed the ball high, into the net again before Smillie had a chance to meet it. Play was now about the Old Boys’ territory for a time, Alsopp and McDonagh carrying the burden of the play for their side. They were, however, unable to withstand the constant pressure of a superior combination and McLachlan, from a long way out, put in a shot which lifted high into the net. Riddley always seemed to be in his place on the Old Boys’ outside right and was responsible for the ball being put in position for many a' shot. Waterson received a nasty knock on the knuckle which necessitated attention and thenceforth he played a one-handed game. McLachlan and Hammond again found the net in quick succession and the 'game ended — Old Boys 13 United 1 The game was effectively controlled by Mr J. J. Davison, of Cambridge. GAMES IN AUCKLAND.
