TOPICS OF THE MOMENT. (Our Resident Representative.) Personal. , Mr J. H. S. Saunderson, a popular resident and business mjin of Otorohanga, who has for many months past been a patient at King George Hospital, Rotorua, where he underwent several severe operations, has returned to his home much improved in health, although it will be necessary for him to continue with hospital treatment before he is restored to his normal condition. School Committees. The following are results of the. elections of committees for various schools in the Otorohanga district:— Whawharua: Messrs A. R. Pilcher, W. H. Blackett, Dempster, E. Marks (chairman), and G. Armstrong. Honikiwi- —Messrs R. L. Slatter -(chairman), A. Parke, Kohi, J. Sklenars, and J. H. Graham. Otewa—Messrs N. Symes (chairman), A. R. Ings, G. A. Smith, G. D. Pinny, and E. J. Moore. Rangiatea—Messrs N. S. Circombe, R. Brough (chairman), A. Dockery, C. Martin, and W. Rowe. Kio Kio —Messrs T. Cumpstone (ohairman), A. E. Trott, J. Wallace, B. D. Luxmoore, and James Sing. Sports and Pastimes. The local Bowling Club's season will conclude on Saturday, when the finals in the President's Handicap competitions will be the principal attraction. The ladies are also playing their final croquet games on the same afternoon. A fourball golf contest has been staged on the local links. Hockey. At the annual meeting of the men’s Hockey Club Mr A. E. Wilson-Smith presided. The election of officers resulted: Patron, Mr A. E. WilsonSmith; president, Mr A. Fleming; vicepresidents. Messrs C. G. Murphy, L. V. Sandmann, A. Morley, Dr. Gilberd, and Mr E. L. Williams; secretary, Mr R. Craddock; captain, Mr L. Sweetman; vice-captain, Mr It. Lee; committee —Captain, Vice-Captain, Secretary, and Messrs J. Doull and G., A. Cornfoot; delegates to the Uni'on, Captain, Vice-Captain and Secretary; referee and selector, Mr A. Fleming; social committee, Captain, Vice-Cap-tain, Secretary and Messrs Cornfoot, Doull and McCready. The annual subscription was fixed at 7s Gd for seniors and 5s for firstyear players. The club will affiliate with the Waipa Hockey Club (Te Awamutu). The colours are red and white, and play will commence on the school grounds pending a permanentsite being secured by the club. Otorohanga Fire Brigade. The Otorohanga Fire Brigade upheld the prestige of the district at the recent fire brigades’ demonstration, held at Dargaville, where the principal brigades of the Auckland province were met in ihe various competitions. In the five-men reel, disabled hose, Otorohango won. In-the fourmen, disabled hose, for the Cambridge Shield, Otorohanga was second, being defeated by Taumarunui. In the Lhree-

men hose and standpipe, Otorohanga won. In the two-men, hose and standpipe, Otorohanga was only beaten by Taumarunui. Motor Collision. On Tuesday afternoon a collision occurred between a lorry, owned by the Farmers’ Auctioneering Company and driven by Charles Knox, and a car that was being driven Southwards by Mr E. 11. J. Fiebell, of Palmerston North. The right-hand front wheel of the lorry was shorn clean off by the impact, the car being damaged. No one was hurt. The Shooting Season. The prospects of sportsmen securing good bags on May i are bright, as game is reported to be fairly plentiful in most out back districts. Grey duck are seen in large numbers quite close to Otorohanga, !i;e Orahiri and Waitomo swamps being their principal rendezvous. Pheasants and quail are plentiful in the Honikiwi and Rangitoto districts, as also are pukeko. A few malard ducks were seen on Wednesday on the Maukururua river. Pigfeons which are protected are extremely plentiful on the bush clad slopes of the Rangitoto ranges.
