While three people slept in a bedroom at the home of Mr and Airs Clem Eaves, Grey Lynn, a burglar climbed through an open window, forced open three drawers in a chest, and stole £lB. Judging by the marks on the top of the drawers a great deal of leverage had to be used to force the lock. There were two beds in the room. One was occupied by a woman and child, and the other by another child. Two families live in the house, and all save one little girl, who was in 1 lie bedroom, are deaf and dumb, so the apparently daring burglar need have had no fear. He apparently was aware of this, for there was evidence of his having slept in the wash-house. The sum of money in I lie house was the result of hard saving by both families. Eight £1 notes and two £5 notes were stolen.
