HEADLIGHTS.

Rending the veil of sleep from patient night, Piercing her heart with quick impermanent light, We go. Like a relentless river in full flood The road runs on before us swift as doom, Hurling itself to abysses of gloomAnd wintry trees awakened from their dream Stretch out gnarled, hungry branches lo the gleam Of singing lamps. From shadowed copse and ditch green, jewelled eyes Of ghost or gnome or little hunting beast Look out at us in agonised surprise.

Beauty of fire we give, as we pass by. The becchen hedge refusing still to die Or shed its leaves; Shaking its withered splendour in the cold While momentary’ autumn once more weaves From our bright coming aureoles of gold. A vagrant man who limps at weary pace Turns towards radiance a suppliant face, Then vanishes Where in our wake unconquered darkness reigns Sweetly unruffled as lhe heavens are After ihe brilliance of a falling star. —Nina Condron.
