TROUBLE IN MALTA.
RELIGION IN POLITICS. EARLY DISSOLUTION EXPECTED. A BITTER STRUGGLE. United Press Assn.—Elec. Tel. —Copyright. MALTA, March 28. Clerical representatives in the Senate moved a resolution condemning the Government’s conduct as harmful to the spiritual interests of the Maltese people, tending to weaken their respect and obedience to ecclesiastical authorities, and impairing the authority of the bishops. The Premier, replying, asked for a week’s adjournment, in order to rebut charges by official documents that cannot be disclosed without the authority of the Imperial Government. The Senate rejected an adjournment by ten to four. Parliament is now discussing the final stages of the Appropriation Bill, after which a dissolution is expected. The electoral campaign is already in full swing. The Nationalists, supported by a majority of the clergy, are making the religious question the chief issue, producing the most bitter struggle in Maltese history.
