TRIAL FOURS. ivIRS, DOUGLAS HAY’S TROPHIES. Last Saturday witnessed a change ! in the Hamilton Rowing Club’s operations, when trial fours were held for trophies donated by Mrs Douglas Hay, wife of the president of the club. ; There was a large muster of mem- , 1-ers and supporters, and afternoon tea j was provided by an energetic ladies ■ committee consisting of Mesdames S. j Buchanan and Bowling and Misses Halliday and E. and A. Ander. The following six. crews took the water: — , 1. A. Patterson, McAnally, Quin, M. j Speight. | 2. Partridge, Layne, Yallop, Toot- j hill. | 3. I. St. Clair, Somerville, Sweeney, V. St. George. 4. Hammond, Hare, Morpeth, Baxter. 5. Curnow, McKenzie, W. Kane, Palmer. i 6. E. Waters, Gummer, Moore, Blyth. j The Racing. The first heat resulted in a stirring finish. Patterson’s crew established an early lead, and were a clear length ahead at the launches. Then Partridge's crew made a spurt, but suffered defeat by a bare'canvas. Jn the second beat Hammond’s crew met St. Clair’s. Hammond’s crew contained no fewer than three of the light-weight crewq and this combination proved too much for their heavier ■ opponents, who held Hammond’s crew' for half the distance, but then died away, to suffer defeat by a length and a half. Curnow’s crew met Waters’s in the third heat, and showing better combination paddled home comfortably by a length and a half. ; The semi-final proved thrilling when j Curnow met Hammond. The crews | rowed neck and neck all the way, and amidst wild excitement Hammond's crew' crossed the line a bare six inches ahead of Curnow’s. ! Patterson and Hammond met in the final, and, having a race less, Patterson’s crew' proved too tough a proposition for Hammond's, who went, under by a clear two lengths. j The winning crew was A. Patterson, • Quin, M. ' Speight, and McAnally, whilst the runners-up were Hammond, Hare, Morpeth and Baxter. A pleasing feature of the event w’as that Quin, a visitor from the Waitemata Rowing Club, was in the winning crew. j Mrs Dougles Hay capably acted as judge of the afternoon’s sport. Presentation of Trophies. In calling upon Mrs Hay to make the presentation of the trophies (silver cups) to the winning quartette, the president (Mr Douglas Hay) congratulated the club upon again being the leading club in the Auckland pro- j vince and upon maintaining its past l proud record. He was pleased to note that the club still held a New Zealand championship in the shed, since Messr.-.' W. Eayly and B. Sandos had won the New' Zealand pair-oar championship this season. He urged all members to carry on the good work of past members. Mr A. Patterson suitably responded for the fortunate recipients of the silver cups. Mr S. 11. Buchanan, club captain, thanked Mrs D. Hay for her donation of trophies, and called on members for cheers for the donor, which were heartily given.

Mr W. V. St. George, club secretary, also expressed the gratitude of members to the ladies’ committee for the dainty fare provided that afternoon and for their good work at all club functions.

Members were also notified that trial fours wmuld be held next Saturday for trophies donated by the club patron, Mr C. H. Holloway.
