HAMILTON CLUB. OFFICIAL OPENING. The St. Andrews links were officially opened on Saturday by the president, Dr H. Douglas, when a mixed foursome over 12 holes was played by a large and enthusiastic gathering of players, the winners being Mr and Mrs L. Tompkins. In his opening speech the president in wishing members of both the ladies’ and men’s clubs a happy season, said he specially wished to thank the Ladies’ Club for their valuable assistance to the club in having the dining-room of the club-house lined, which made a great improvement. In referring to his visit to the Old- Country last year Dr. Douglas said that he was surprised to note the increasing popularity of the game there, remarking that it was a common sight to see golf courses on either side of the railway line when approaching the larger towns. In many instances there were minature nine hole approaching and putting courses situated in the towns themselves. The speaker then referred to courses that he had played on but stated that it was always a pleasure to return to St. Andrews. In asking Mrs Hears, the president of the Ladies’ Club, to drive the first ball, the president said be felt sure that members would see how it should be done. In this no one was disappointed the ball coming to rest about 1 feet from the pin. Members were later the guests of Dr. and Mrs Douglas at a dainty afternoon tea. DEFEAT OF DR. ROSS. DUNEDIN, Sunday. All four matches in the second round yesterday of the competition for the Olago Golf Club championship produced surprises, chief of which was the defeat of Dr. Ross, who has held the club championship for several successive years- On this occasion C. T. Irvine beat him, 1 up. Another great surprise was the defeat of Butcher by Trewern, while G. Dick defeated Spence, who had the best score in the qualifying rounds. In the fourth match, Hay defeated J. L. Wight, member of a well-known golfing family. UNIQUE RECORD. 35 YEARS SECRETARY. PALMERSTON NORTH, Saturday. A record unique in the golfing annals of New Zealand is that of Mr Lionel A. Abraham, who last night relinquished "the office of honorary secretary of the Manawatu Golf Club after 35 yeais. Mr Abraham having declined nomination for the presidency, the club honoured him by electing him a life member and life patron. April 11 will be the thifty-flfth anniversary of the first meeting of the club, and on that date members will entertain and make a presentation to the doyen of golf secretaries. Mr -\braham has donated a cup, to be known as the “35 Cup,” for competition in the two best rounds of the Tune Julv and August medal competition’ and the 36 holes on the first day of the Easter and annual tournaments. -
