DAY BY DAY.
Once there were five neighbours who, on the surface at all A Parable events, appeared to of be good friends. But Peace-making, they really distrusted
each other, and so each in his backyard kept a number of bulldogs, bloodhounds, and Alsatians. Every now and then one of them would increase the number of one or .other class of his dogs. Suppose it were .bloodhounds- Immediately his rfeigh’bour would increase his AlsaUans, and the next fellow would buy more bulldogs. Then they would have a conference to see what could be done' .about it, as it was costing them all a heap of money. One fellow would say: “Let us decrease our bulldogs ail round.” "All right,” the others would say, “but we won’t decrease our bloodhounds or Alsatians. We are strong believers in these breeds.” A-proposal to decrease any one of the breeds always found support from some of the others, as well as objections from the remainder, and so they never got any further than building new kennels and adding fresh dogs. Ultimately the cost of feeding so many dogs absorbed nearly three parts of their incomes, and it seemed that there was nothing ahead but insolvency. • And so they decided to hold another conference. —Australian paper, 1
