POLO.

TOURNAMENT AT FEILDING

WAIKATO TEAMS PARTICIPATE. THE PLAY DESCRIBED. At the annual Savile Cup tournament of the New Zealand Polo Association at Feilding, Matangi A, Matangi B, and Waimai were teams representing this district. Following are the details of games in which these teams were concerned: — SAVILE CUP. WAIRARAPA A v. MATANGI AA WIN FOR THE FORMER. Wairarapa (red) —C. H. G. Hewitt, D. G. Collins, D. H. S. Riddiford, R. N. Barton. Matangi (old gold).—D. Kay, junr., A. McNicoi, T. Hines, G. de V. Chitty. The reds pressed from the throwin, Hewitt' going on to goal, hut the Waikato men turned the tables immediately, Kay equalising. An exchange of shots in midfield found Matangi invading the red circle, Hines providing the finish to the movement with a drive betwen the posts, the ehukka ending Matangi 2—i.

Riddiford saved well at the beginning of the second spell, Matangi being almost through. Barton and Ilewitt came away with a run, Chilly being ridden off the hall for llewilt lo goal. The reds pressed again, fast riding taking them past the Matangi defence, Riddiford finding the posts, Collins adding another goal a few moments later. Matangi rallied and a hard ride between Kay and Riddiford saw the Waikato man get his shot home, the spell ending Wairarapa 4—3. The. third ehukka was hotly contested, the reds finally piercing the defence for Collins to goal, but a hard ride between Hines and Riddiford immediately after saw the Waikato rider get in a hard shot well out to find the posts, 'the spell closing with the reds' leading 5 —4. Good team work by the reds in the following ehukka saw Collins add another goal to the Wairarapa tally, the same player executing a nice dribble from the side line to repeat the performanc after the change over, a third goal from the same stick following quickly-on the previous two. Hines rode into Ihe picture for Matangi, working Riddiford off Ihe willow to get his drive home but the reds were not long in following suit, Collins being the scoring agent. The ehukka bell rang with the scores reading: Wairarapa 9—Matangi 5. The final score was: Wairarapa Matangi 6

JUNIOR CUP CONTESTS. WAIMAI BEAT HAWKE’S BAY B. The first match for the junior cup saw another close fight betwen Waimai (Waikato) and Hawke’s Bay B, the northern representatives finally winning by the margin of one goal. The teams were: — . Hawke’s Bay B. —D. Newbiggen, R. Nelson, J. Chambers, 11. McKenzie. Waimai. —H. W. Upton, C. Grace, E. €• White, T. C. Wilson. Vigorous and greatly exciting play found Hie teams fighting throughout the early part of the game to maintain a goal advantage of each other, first one and then the other scoring. Mar«v goals were lost by misdirected hitting, no less than seven behinds lining hit by Waimai in one ehukka. At the end of the sixth spell the score stood five all and both teams went, all out in the last clnikka lo secure the winning hit. Just five seconds before time Waimai set, up a strong attack which got through the Bay defence, to win by one goal as the hell sounded. The final scores being:— Waimai •> goals. Hawke’s Bay 5 goals. matangi b. v. wair arapa Bthe former succeed. Matangi (old gold).—W. Phillips, R Townsend, H. Brown, L- Cliitty. 'Wairarapa (lancer red).—H. Runny, R. A. Runny, J. L. Stevenson, \y f' G. Johnston. The Waikato men put on two goals ; in Ihe first spell and, despite strong j efforts on the part of the reds to I

score,, maintained the two goal lead until the third chukka when good team work between Phillips and Townsend saw the latter pick up a hack handed centring shot from the former to outdistance the opposition and find tire posts. The old gold players were on the attack from the change over, Chilly piloting the willow between the flags as the hell sounded, making the Waikato men i—o. Hard riding marked the opening of the fourth chukka, the attack centring in front of the Matangi posts, but the reds failed to press home the advantage through mis-directcd hitting and Phillips later missed a “sitter,” following a strong rush by Matangi | which carried them right to the Wairarapa goal mouth. The spell ended without score. The next chukka opened with a tussle in front of the reds’ goal, Johnston making a splendid save from a hard drive by Phillip-, but perseverance by the old gold players saw Phillips accept the willow to direct it through thq. posts and in a running light following the change over Townsend raised the flags for Matangi’s sixth goal. The following spell opened with a penalty hit to -Matangi. Johnston crossing badly just as the hell rang in the preceding chukka. Phillips had no difficulty in raising the flags. The Waikato men were now outplaying I heir opponents who were missing badly in their hitting. A dual effort between Phillips and Brown saw the old gold No. 1 (Brown) get in a strong hit from well out that found Ihe posts and a minute later the same j player was just a trilie out in his direction, the willow going behind. Again Matangi attacked, Townsend goaling. Tlie added reverses stung Ihe reds into greater efforts and good play by Johnston found them in an attacking position. Johnston drove through to 11. Bunny who lapped the hall through for Wairarapa's first goal. In Ihe succeeding play Phillips was unhoised though not hurl, hut the temporary weakness in Ihe defence gave the reds a chance which H. Bunny drove home from a difficult I angle, die spell ending 9—2 in fa.our j of Matangi. I Loose, play characterised die final spell, both teams lacking in eombina- ! lion, the final bell sounding with the j scores reading— Matangi 9 goals. Wairarapa 2 goals.
