Civil, in reporting on the month s [activities slated that grading with motor and horse graders had been carried out on the Great South Road, Ngaruawaliia to Hamilton. A 40ft. x 36in. concrete pipe culvert had been placed in position at a lower level in Collie’s Road to replace two small culver! s and alignment and grades improved on in the vicinity of the culvert. Walsh’s road had been sanded and grading on the Main Highway, Hamilton-Whatawhata Road car-

General maintenance work in the Hamilton riding was being proceeded with on the Hamilton to Ngaruawahia Great, South Road, on Burbush and Eliicolt’s roadsit was considered by the engineer that an engineering survey of 30 chains of Lee’s Road lie left over to next year in order to secure a £1 for £i subsidy for the work. The Hamilton to Te Awamulu Croat South Road had been graded and some 90 chains from Mystery creek to the Rukuhia Factory had been given a coal, of gravel and necessary repair work carried out. The Rukuhia Railway Station Road had also been attended to and the whole surface of !h« Lake Crescent. Road re-surfaced with three cubic yards per chain. In company with Cr. E. F. Peacocke, the engineer had met settlers interested in the proposed Rukuhia Drainage scheme when an inspection ol iho land and drains had 'been made on lhe various roads in the riding. Widening and sanding work on the Xgahinapouri to , Rukuhia Railway Station Road was carried out during Ihc month and grading, gravelling and general surface work attended to on various works in the riding. Metal had been carted ancl spread on the Hamilton-Whatawhata section of the Great South Road while fair progress was being made with the forming of 80 chains of Ranby’s Road. in ail other ridings general surface work had been altiended to while in the Orakau riding specifications and proposals had been approved of by the Public Works Department for 23

chains of metalling with Otorohanga gravel, the Te Awamutu-Kihikihi fiat road. This work was now completed. lt was considered advisable by Cr. T. Church that members should make a tour of the 'county roads with a view to ascertaining the state of the roads in the various ridings and what work was necessary in this connection-
