FRANKLIN RACING CLUB

■ A TRIPLE DEAD HEAT,RECORDED. VALI, RESPIRATOR AND GEMLIGHT IN LINE. THE LEADING HONOURS TO HYDE PARK. EAGLET FINISHES TOO WELL FOR THE SPRINTERS Although rain threatened at an early period of the afternoon, It never arrived and the annual meeting of the Franklin Racing Club, which was held at Pukekohe on Saturday, was conducted under favourable climatic conditions. The popularity of the gathering was testified by a very large attendance and the public, In turn, were rewarded with racing of a keen standard. An outstanding feature of the occasion was the recording of a triple dead heat In the Pukekohe Handicap, the concluding event, in which Vali, Respirator and Gemlight went past the judge on level terms. The favourite, Hyde Park, was successful in the leading event of the programme, the Franklin Handicap, Royal Doulton and Desert Glow being closest of the others when the ten furlongs were run out. Eaglet indicated that she is coming back to form by a clear cut success over Cynthia N., Branson and the other sprinters in the Tuakau Flying Handicap. The highwoight honours passed to Glena Bay with Kawini and Kairuri handy while in the next start the same Waikato stable (M. J. Carroll’s) produced I’m Alone to secure a narrow margin victory over another district candidate in Chromadyne, with Sir IVlond third, In the Bombay Handicap. Form worked out when Currajong was returned the winner of the Waiuku Hack Handicap in which Totrachate and On Top were the next to finish. Spring Abbey and IVlotero ran a dead heat for the main money in Onewhero Handicap, Brampton being third while the limited followers of Carlaris were on good terms with themselves when the Carl Rosa gelding won the Buckland Hack Handicap, with Sir IVlond and Big Bertha the closest of the others at the finish. In a totalisator turnover of £31,499 there was but a slight decrease (£797) on last year’s tally.

NOTES ON THE RUNNING. The nine acceptors appeared for the opening event, the Puni llighweight Handicap for which Ivairuri was favourite with £95 more than Wenday, with Glcna Bay and Kawini in most demand of the rest. In a race which was slowly run in the early stages Glena Bay had a handy position, although wide out, with six furlongs to go. Once they levelled up for the run home Glena Bay took charge and got the verdict comfortably by a length. Kawini was in second place on Saturday and is going to he in good order for the big jumping events ahead. Kairuri was travelling very fast right on the outside, only a neck behind Kawini at the judge’s box. The Surveyor chestnut ran about a good deal. Alashoor, who made -HI the pace, was in fourth berth; tiring a little after running a good race. Wenday was never seriously in Hie picture and her Trentham engagement is doubtful. Favourite Wins From Big Field. The big field of twenty-four appeared for the Bombay Handicap, from which Lusonia was Hie only withdrawal. The public went for I’m Alone, the Hastings owned three-year-old Lord (Juex —Bayonne gelding in AL ,J. Can-oil's local learn, who was entrusted with £169 more than Hannibal, while Sir Aloud and Chromadyne had most atlenlion ol" the rest. Tile favourite got there but Wiggins had Lo ride him vigorously over the concluding stages lo get him up to beat Chromadync by half a head. Both will be heard from again. They were well placed throughout the six furlongs, although the winner had the disadvantage of being drawn wide out at the starting post. Sir Mond, who was a length further olf, was a little slow to find his feet. The Seremond horse, who is not easy to control, ran a good race. Tambourine, who showed useful form at Rotorua,, was travelling on in fourth place at the close. The well-backed Hannibal ran a fair race but did not actually reach the firing line. Onewhero was prominent for five furlongs, but the pacemaker stopped after that. A Success to Currajong. Sea Song and Arihana were the withdrawals from the Waiuku Hack Handicap, leaving -a field of nine lo contest this six furlong event. The public made On Top, a double winner at Rotorua, a good favourite with £l4B more than Treasury, while Currajong was the next in request. Currajong got Ihe verdict by half a length. The Lucullus gelding hacl .filled second place in his two starts at ie Arolia, so form worked out well. This gave H. Wiggins, who had steered two outsiders home at Napier the previous day his second win in succession on Saturday. Tetrach-ate, who had beaten Currajong on the first day at Te Arolia, followed the latter home on this occasion, after being better placed than the winner until the judge’s box was in sight. On Top was a neck olf third-, just heading Treasury, who made most of the pace on the trip, but was not quite equal to holding on, although the latter’s turn will -come. Carl Idem did best of the rest. Big Bertha was always well back. Hyde Park Scores Readily. Sir -Archie was the only one missing from the Franklin Handicap for which there were nine runners. Hyde Park was a £lB3 better first choice than Roval Doußon, with Alithra having most attention of the rest but at a liberal price. When it. came lo real business in a race, which was slowly mn over the early stages, Hyde Park answered I,he call without lacing seiiou’filv troubled. The Alarble Arch "elding sot. die verdict by half a length ' after being well placed Ihroughoul. Royal. Doulton was finishing on strongly at the end. While she could not have beaten the winner in any case, the Romeo —Teeoma mare was left a lot to do over the closing stages of the ten furlongs. Desert Glow, who was third at another gap of half a length, gave further indication that he is coming back to "form. Transformer's fourth was his best effort for some time but he was tiring over the last stages of the trip Alosaic again raced badly, being about last throughout. Dead Heat In the Onowhero. The eight carded appeared for the Onewhero Hack Handicap for which Spring Abbey was the elect with £3BB more than Haviland, with Alolere a good third choice- The three were in the final issue. Spring Abbey and Afolcre recording a dead heat. Spring Abbev who was always at or near the front!’looked to have the race in His keeping when the judge's box was m sight but Afotere, finishing at a fast rat. c ’got up lo share in the leading honours. It looked as if AlcTavish on Spring Abbey did not expect, the late challenge. Both horses are in excellent form. Brampton also came wilh a wet sail to reach third place, half a length from the dead-heaters. Always was fourth after making most of the running. Si. Ames was fifth after a slow beginning, while Snow Plane \vent well for -a time.

Eaglet Beats the Sprinters. Gemlight and Abbess were missing from the Tuakau Flying Handicap for which there were eight runners, of whom Eaglet was the elect with £BO more than Gold Money, Lucy Rose having most attention of the others. Eaglet proved herself a class above the rest, even although she got a run on the fence from the home turn. The Chief Ruler—Dovelet filly, who is to race in the Thompson Handicap at Trentham on Saturday, will soon be at her best again. Cynthia N, who races in the same ownership (Mr X. Cunningham) as Hyde Park, came with a late run to reach second place at an interval of three-quarters of a length. The Juggernaut mare returned almost as much as the winner. Branson also finished with a rattle from the back to be a neck off, third. This was the best form of the Grey spear—Garston gelding for some time- He is not himself, however, and is to undergo an X-ray examination for throat trouble. Lucy Rose began slowly and was never placed like a winner, although she was also galloping strongly at the finish. An experienced rider would be an advantage. Gold Money, who had the lead in the middle stages, failed to run it out but the Paper Money—. Miss Klhel marc required the race. From this out she will be a serious contender. Tinokoa, who was making his first appearance for some time, was prominent in the opening stages of lhe race. Value did nol get into ihc picture. .Joy Germ was well placed for half a mile. Carlaris at a C.ood Figure. Snow Plane, who had started earlier, was the only one missing from the Buckland Hack Handicap for which there were twelve runners. Aggressive, who entered the winning list at Te Aroha, was backed clown well inside even money with £768 more than Rose Willonyx, while Sir Mond was third in request.. Carlaris won at the longest price of the day but It was not a true run race. The favourite was going merrily in front with the straight handy, when the Kilbroney— Vicereine mare broke a fetlock and terminated a career which indicated promise. This' was the first success to the credit of Carlaris. Alter the mishap there was a lot of bumping in the straight in which Page Boy and Big Bertha were prime suflerers when holding winning prospects. This was due to Sir Mond, who ran the winner to a neck, proving more than his pilot could manage. Big Bertha and Page Boy were third and fourth respectively' at the judge’s box- The inquiry showed tliat Aggressive’s mishap had interfered with the prospects of several followers, and brought Little Gift (Bagby) down while Odin (Chote) came to his knees and lost his pilot. The riders escaped injury. A Remarkable Finish. There were nine starters in the concluding event, the Buckland Handicap, from which Branson was the defection. Vali was a good first choice with £361 more than Gemlight and Imperial Prince next in request. The event produced a remarkable finish, Respirator, Vali and Gemlighigoing past‘the judge (Mr R. B. in line and the unusual happening ol a triple dead heal was recorded. But for losing a good position in the middle stages, Vali may have won outright. The judge placed King Willonyx fourth, but Imperial Prince was in that position. CONCLUDING RESULTS. BUCKLAXU HACK HANDICAP. Of £ 1 '2O ; about 7 fur. 22yds. 9 CARLARIS. Mr 11.
