SCHOOL PICNIC

FAIRFIELD CHILDREN’S OUTING. RAIN CAUSES ABANDONMENT. For weeks past the children of the Fairfield school have been eagerly looking forward to their annual picnic, and when, after they had almost reached their destination, heavy rain fell, it is unnecessary to say that they were disappointed. When the river steamer Alanuwai left Hamilton for Cambridge on Saturday morning, the sun shone from a rather doubtful looking sky. But children about to commence a picnic do not notice such signs as these, and the party set off in high spirits. During the journey up the river, morning tea was served to the ladies, while Hie children received fruit. When Cambridge was almost in sight, a light drizzle began to fall, and before long rain set in in earnest, precluding the possibility of carrying out the sports programme that had been arranged. Most of the picnickers had their lunch on hoard and, after a consultation the school committee decided to abandon the picnic. Accordingly, the steamer was turned homeward, but the children, not to lie deprived of their outing, made the most of the return journey, and enjoyed themselves with music ancl games, while the adults played cards. Thus, it was quite a happy parly that disembarked and returned to their homes, hoping that next year’s event would he favoured by better weather.
