OBITUARY.

MRS A., W. EDWARDS. There passed .away on Monday last after an illness of a few days, one ol Te Aroha’s earliest and most esteemed settlers In the person of Mrs Ani Jane Edwards, relict of the late Mr A. \V. Edwards. Deceased was the eldest daughier of the late George Lipsey and Ema Mokena Lipsey, the latter being the daughter of Mokena Hou, chief of the Nati-rahiri and Ngati-Koropanga tribes. The late Airs Lipsey was born in Te Aroha 50 years ago, and was educated there,' where she also learned French and other languages. She was possessed of considerable property in conjunction with the Lipsey family at Okauia, Otorohanga, Thames, Matamata, and Te Aroha. In the latter place the Lipseys owned the whole of Lipsey town, the elder daughter possessing a third of the land which no\y comprises the Te Aroha township, and ■ it will redound to the credit of the family that they in a spirit of splendid generosity donated the necessary land to the churches, school and public buildings. Ttus they contributed very materially to the foundation and future progress of what is now a thriving borough. In the case of St. Mark’s Church, the land was not only presented but monetary assistance towards the erection of the .sacred edifice was.' also gladly given. Deceased and her family were use-, ful members of the- Church of England and their names will be long remembered for ‘the undoubted assistance rendered, especially in the early days when contributions were more restricted than in the present day. In the full sense of the word Mrs Edwards could be termed a fine sportswoman, and she was the owner of the well-known racing mare Honesty, which rack’d successfully 20 years ago. The late Mrs Edwards was beloved by a host of intimate friends throughout the district. She was of a most charitable disposition and a sincere | friend, and members of the many institutions that she assisted over a ! period of years will revere her memory and her decease will be especially deplored by those who recognised the sterling qualities of one that ever worked so willingly for many good causes whose welfare she had at heart. Deceased leaves a grown-up family of eight —Misses Gwennie and Lorna Edwards of Te Aroha, Mrs Mander of Hamilton, Mrs Gower of Te Puke, and Messrs Alex. ' (Whangarei), David, Cecil and Colin Edwards (Te Aroha). A daughter, Mrs H. Croad, died two years ago. MR. JOHN PERRY. The death has occurred of Mr. John Perry, at the age of 88 years. Mr. Perry, was born in County Tyrone, Ireland, and came to New Zealand when 17 years of age. He took part in the Gabriel’s Gully gold rush, and then settled in Goldsborough, Westland, where he took over valuable mining rights. He was the first to harness water power in connection with sluicing operations for winning alluvial gold on the West Coast. Air. Perry later became an overseer on the North Island Main Trunk railway construction works. Eight years ago he became ill and both his legs were' amputated. He has since lived with his son, the Rev. William Perry, at Hamilton. Air. Perry is survived by two sons, Air. Samuel Perry, of Wellington, the Rev. William Perry, of Hamilton, and three daughters, Mesdames T. Devonport, Wanganui, 1.). The death of Airs Eliza Ormiston, of Onehunga, occurred on Saturday, at the age of 101 years. A resident of New Zealand for GO years, Airs Ormiston enjoyod good health almost to the end, and retained her faculties. MR T. VALOIS. WELL-KNOWN FILAI MANAGER. WELLINGTON, Al O nda y. The death occurred on Saturday of Mr T. Valois, manager of R. K. 0. Films. lie was well-known in motion picture circles. For some time lie was manager of Cinema Art Films, which lie left to take up his position in Wellington. Formerly Air Valois, was associated with the Hayward am* O’Brien theatres in Auckland. MR. W. H. TAFT. WASHINGTON. March 8. The death has occurred of Mr. W. H Taft, formerly President and ‘Chief Justice of the United States. The President, Air. Hoover, has proclaimed 30 days'of national mourning and a funeral with naval and military honours for the deceased statesman*
