The totalisator handled £12,362, compared with £12,327 on the firrt .day of last year, an increase of £35. MATAMATA NOTES. LOCAL HORSES’ DOINGS. (Special to Times.) Consistent Prince Val. Matamata horses had a lean time at Te Aroha"over the week-end, Prince Val being the only one to get in the money. With a little more luck lie might have won on Monday, as lie was beaten by a very small margin. This horse lias been a very consistent performer this season and was allowed to go out paying a surprisingly good price. Backed and Beaten. Valstreet was well backed on Saturday in the Shaftesbury Handicap but never showed up any part of the race. This little chap is very highly strung and gets greatly on his toes before a race. In neither of his starts at Te Arolia did he do himself justice, and is proving expensive to follow. Valcuir Off Colour. Valcuir from B. Martin's stable was not taken to Te Aroha as he is suffering from some internal trouble. It is to be hoped that it will not necessitate his being spelled as this son of Valkyrian—Lady Cuirassier was just striking form and looked like turning out a useful horse.

Oscar for Hurdle Racing. Oscar from the same stable is to be given a chance over the sticks. He is a good jumper and may prove a better proposition ■at this department than on the Hat. His owner, W. C. Vincent, has been very presevering with Oscar and it is to he hoped that he will yet repay him. Wild Sea Again Working. Wild Sea trained by J. Percival has recovered from a knock received while galloping in her paddock and is again working on the tracks. It was unfortunate for her owner that she had to he let up as she was coming to hand nicely. She is however, as yet a baby and will have her opportunity in another season. This filly is by Catmint from Wild Wave. Steadfast Spelling. Steadfast who showed promise last June by winning the second division of the Jervois Handicap has been spelling on W. C. Ring's properly at Hinuera. It is rumoured that he is to be given to a local trainer to prepare for future racing. Steadfast is by Valkyrian but of Unity and is owned by Dr. A. M. Grant, of Auckland.
