DESTRUCTIVE FIRES

OUTBREAK AT. WHAKATANE. (By Telegraph—press Association.) WHAKATANE, Friday. A fire occurred early this morning in premises owned by L. Buddie and occupied by Mr L. Running, electrician, and Messrs Buddie and Olley, solicitors.

The outbreak started in Bunning’s shop, which was completely gutted, but most of the stock had been removed to new premises. A good deal of damage was done to Messrs Buddie and Otley’s premises by Are and water. Buddie was insured for £IOO in the British Traders’ Office, and the contents of Buddie and Otley’s premises for £6lO in the South British Office. Two racing motor-cycles were destroyed. The insurance is not known. OUTBREAK AT URENUI. POST OFFICE DESTROYED. NEW PLYMOUTH, Friday. Two buildings in Urenui township were destroyed last night by Are which broke out in a store occupied by Mr Roy Fitzgerald. The Aames spread to the post office. This morning all that was left was heaps of twisted iron and other ruins.

■Helpers removed practically everything of value from the post office and the residential quarters of Mr G. Loveridge, the postmaster, at tiie hack of the building. The exchange switchboard, a valuable piece of apparatus, was saved, together with the records and books. The post ofAce was not insured, but Mr Loveridge’s furniture was insured for £l5O in the State OfAce. The store building, owned by Mr .T. Murray, of Uruti, was insured for £250 in the Commercial Union OfAce. The stock was insured for £llOO in the Queensland OfAce. • .
