BEEF PRICES MAINTAINED. STEADY DEMAND FOR SHEEP. PIG VALUES FIRMER. Beef was penned in more than average numbers at the weekly fat stock sale at Westfield yesterday. Steady prices were again maintained, and extra choice ox sold up to 42s per 1001 b-, the ruling figure. There was an average yarding of sheep, which met with a steady demand. Sales generally were made at late rates, there being a slightly firmer tendency for several classes, although top prices realised were not above those of last week- A keen demand for lambs resulted in firmer quotations in view of the fact that there was a slightly smaller offering. Competition was steady for calves, which caime forward in average numbers, all classes selling at values equal to and above late prices. Values for pigs were firmer, prices for baconers and porkers advancing appreciably. There was an average yarding of calves, which met with a keen demand with improved values. Dalgety and Go., Ltd., report:— At our weekly fat stock sale at Westfield we offered ox beef in larger numbers than last week. Fewer heavy weight cattle were offered, and last week’s values remained firm under steady competition. Cow and heifer beef was also penned in large numbers, the market being steady and no alteration in values taking place. Extra choice ox sold to 42s per 1001 b.; choice and primo, 38s to 40s; secondary and plain, 33s to 355; prime young cow and heifer beef, 395; ordinary cow beef, 34s to 365; heavy prime steers brought £ls 10s to £l6; lighter, prime steers, £l4 to £l4 6s; light prime steers, £l2 2s 6d to £l3 15s; extra heavy prime young cows and heifers,. £lO 12s 6d to £ll 7s 6d; heavy prime cows and heifers, £8 17s 6d to £9 15s; -lighter prime cows and heifers, £7 5s to £8 ss; other killable cows, £6 15s. Extra heavy prime wethers, shorn, made 29s 6d; heavy prime, 295; medium, 28s; light and unfinished, 2'ss 6d; heavy prime ewes, 23s 6d; lighter, 225; other ewes, 18s 9d. A large yarding of lambs was offered. Competition was steady with values at well up to late rates. One truck of lambs realised 22s 6d to 23s 9d. Heavy prime lamb made 255; medium, 23s 6d; light, 22s 6d. Calves penned in large numbers sold freely at late quotations. Heavy vealers made £4 to £4 15s; medium vealers, £3 to £3 15s; light vealers, £2 3s to £2 15s; rough vealers, 15s to £1 10s.

Pigs produced sound competition for baconers, but porkers were easier than last week. Choppers made to £2 15s; heavy baconers, £3 12s to £3 18s; medium baconers, £3 5s to £3 10s; light baconers, £2 18s to £3 3s; heavy porkers, £2 10s to £2 14s; medium porkers, £2 4s to £2 8s; light porkers, £1 16s to £2 2s.

Alfred Buokland and Sons, Ltd., report:—At our weekly Westfield fat market yesterday we penned fat

cattle to the number of 267 head, as compared with 332 head at last Wednesday's sale, comprising 153 steers and 114 -cows and heifers. The quality of the ox beef was first-class. There was a keen demand throughout, and last week’s values were fully sustained.
