THE LAND UNPOPULAR.

(To the Editor.) i Sir,—'His Excellency the GovemorGenoral in his recent visit to Hamilton, -spoke on the unpopularity of the land as a vocation and mentioned a few obvious facts. There is no question that land settlement means the solution of the unemployment problem and tho appeasement of discontent, but, as 'has been repeatedly pointed out, the conditions of labour obtaining on farms aro such that they do not appeal to the young people, and a letter which recently appeared In your •columns shows that lads on farms have a hard time. It is, of course, folly to blame tho farmer, for he is unable fo-r • economic reasons, especially when, he Is trying to establish himself, to give his employees Ideal conditions. How improvements are to be made more attractive and congenial is a problem that needs solution, and until it Is done there Is no reason to think that work on tho farms will possess much attraction for our youths.—l am, etc., SOLOMON.
