TE KUITI CLUB’S MEETING.

HIPO SCORES IN THE MAIN EVENT THE STEWARDS TO TOWN BIRD. A VICTORY TO TI TREE. Trie annual meeting of the Te Kuiti Racing Club was opened on Saturday and concluded to-day. For the first day’s racing the weather was ideal and the track in excellent order, while there was a good attendance. Victory in the Cup went to the Taranaki-owned Hipo, while the Cambridge representative, Town Bird, recorded a win over the sprinters in the Stewards’ Handicap. At the conclusion of the main event the gold cup was presented to Mr E. George, the owner of the winner, by Mr W. J. Broadfoot, M.P., while W. Jones, the rider of Hipo, received a gold-mounted whip. Glenison, Tasty and Town Fancy were the scratchings for the Maiden Handicap, in which there were twelve runners. Tuku was the elect with £9O more than Coll, Nassau Lady being third fancy and Joy Girl next. Joy Girl won comfortably by two lengths from Nassau Lady, who beat Coll by a length. Parfait Armour wa3 fourth. The Kopaki Hack Hurdles brought out eight, Cybele, Ah Wera, Ring Potoa and Bob Arnans being the withdrawals. The Lamb, who was £B2 better backed than Spalpiko, won easily by three lengths from Spalpiko, who was a similar distance in front of > Mashoor, with Red Day next. Royal Lover, Appellant, Enow Prince, Big Bertha, Abbey Queen, Norval Tea, and Dainty Arch did not appear for the Awakino Handicap. In a field of fifteen Valuation was favourite, with £7O more than Cruachan, while Te Taone headed the others in the quotations. The favourite was doing it freely with an advantage of two lengths and a half over the eighth favourite, Abbess, with Haviland and Ruby Dawn in the following places.

Outsider Prevails In the Cup,

Ohinemuri, Wenday and Glenstar being withdrawn, nine contested the Cup, for which the Tararlaki-trained The Swell was the elect, with £lll more than Lady’s Boy, Le Choucas coming in for most attention of the others. Taranaki supplied the winner in Hipo, who was the outsider but one, and paid a double-figure, the best of the day. Hipo had half a length to spare over The Swell, with Lady s Boy a neck away, and Le Choucas at the front of the remainder. Seven came out for Te Kuiti Hack Handicap, Luminary, Pompeius, Appellant, Terrapeen and Grand Arch being the withdrawals. Tuku carried most money, but only £l2 more than Master Roley, while Mountain Guide was next Ain a keen investing race. Glena Bay, ■'the fll'lh choice, won well by three lengths from Tuku, who was two lengths ahead of Master Roley, with Mountain Guide next. The small field of five was left to contest the Puketutu Handicap, after the withdrawal of Sir Russell, Glenstar, Palmares and Lunette. Ti Tree, who was £3O better thought of than Macroom, beat the latter comfoitably, although the margin was only a neck. Ohinemuri was two lengths further back, third, with Prince Lu next. Eleven hacks appeared for the Otorohanga Handicap, the scratchings being Archieval, Te Taone, Patere, The Jack Jumper, Appellant, Flapperette, Abbey Queen, Tasty, Otranto and Tuku . Machine figures pointed to Valstreet and Big Bertha, the former having the call by £152, while Quinsllla was third choice. The honours went to Oscar, the fourth favourite, with Valstreet a length away, just heading Quinsilia. Big Bertha was fourth. . . , The sprint event, the Stewards Handicap, brought out only five runners. Ridgemount, Mervette, Arcneen, Macroom, Air King, Hakanoa, Taneriri and Cymon were the defections Awarere was favourite, with £lßl more than Taku Tama, The Begum being next in demand. When the judge’s box was reached the outsider, Town Bird, . who led practically * 'throughput the six furlongs, was a /head in front of Taku Tama, with Iho Begum two lengths further back, third, and Billikins next. Macroom led along the back followed by Prince Lu, Clarus, Ti Tree and Ohinemuri. Crossing the top Macroom and Prince Lu were together in front with Ti Tree, Ohinemuri and Clarus in that order. Macroom turned for home in front of Ti Tree, Prince Lu and Ohinemuri. TI Tree’ got the verdict by a neck from Macroom, who was two lengths In 'front of Ohinemuri, with Prince Lu and Clarus in that order. Time, lmin 31 2-ssecs.

Valstreet was favourite with £515 from Big Bertha £365, Quinsilia £239 and Oscar £l4B. Valstreet was showing the way along the back to Royal Lover, Quinsilia, Monetize and Oscar. Crossing the top the order of the leaders was Quinsilia, Royal Lover, Valstreet, Oscar, Big Bertha and William of Orange. Quinsilia led mto the straight from Royal Lover, Valstreet, Oscar, Big Bertha, Princess Snow and Crown Arch. Oscar won by a length from\Valstreet, who was a* neck in front of Quinsilia, with Big Bertha fourth. Then came Princess Snow, Crown-Arch, Royal Lover, William of Orange and Monetize. Time, lmin 17 2-ssecs. Oscar came through on the rails to outstay the leaders in the run home. His price was on towards double figures. Valstreet ran a good race as did Quinsilia, who should be a lot better l’or this outing. Most money came for - Awarere (£5731), while Taku Tama (£372i),. and The Begum (£372), were closely supported, Town Bird being the outsider with £173. Awarere was squeezed back as the field moved off. There was little separating Town Bird, Billikins and Taku Tama over the first furlong, but Town Bird was well clear half a mile from home, with Billikins, Taku Tama, The Begum and Awarere in that order. When the straight was reached Town Bird still held a useful advantage and he lasted long enough to win by a head from Taku Tama, who was two lengths in front of The Begum, with Billikins and Awarere following. Time, lmin 15 2-ssecs.

Town Bird, who looked a lot improved by his racing at the Waikato meeting, showed sufficient speed in the early stages to establish a sufficient lead to prove equal to the call after his rider had nursed him approaching the home bend. Taku Tama finished well but Awarere was disappointing, despite his failure to go away well.

THE TOTALISATOR FIGURES: £13,784 THROUGH THE MACHINE. A DECREASE OF £1092. The totalisator returns for the day were £13,784, against £14,876 for the corresponding day of last season’s annual meeting, a decrease of £1092. AN INQUIRY HELD. An inquiry was held into bumping during the running of Te Kumi Hack Handicap, in which Master Roley was a principal sufferer, but after hearing the evidence of the riders concerned no action was taken. Three jockeys were injured when their mounts fell in the last race of the Levin Racing Club’s meeting yesterday. Going round the back Le Champ fell over and brought down Golden Shadow, over whom fell Pompadour. T. Green, rider of Golden Shadow, sustained a broken collarbone, and N. Voitre, rider of Lc Champ, and W. Broughton, rider of Pompadour, received slight concussion. FEILDING RE-HANDICAPS.
