TRADE WITH THE EAST

“A REASONABLE CHANCE.” Brief reference to the possibility of New Zealand trade with the East was made at the last meeting of the Wellington Chamber of Commerce. The chairman, Mr E. Salmond, stated that he had had a courtesy call from Mr A. J. Pronk, of Sydney, general manager for Australia and New Zealand of the Rural Packet Navigation Company, and Mr J. W. B. Ewarts, a director of the company, who were interested in the prospects of direct trade relations between New Zealand and the East Indies. Mr Salmond stated that he was not in a position at present to mention all the information he had received from them. There appeared, however, to he a reasonable chance of a service between New Zealand and the Dutch East Indies. That would not get over all their problems, for the Dominion was seeking prospective markets in Japan and China, hut it was a step in the right direction.
