SHIPS IN COLLISION.

A coastal steamer, the San Juan, was sunk in a collision with an oil steamer, 30 miles south of San Francisco. The San Juan carried 55 passengers and a crew of 45 men. Many survivors were picked up. The loss of life cannot be estimated.

Revised figures show that there were 65 passengers and a crew of 45 on the San Juan.It is believed that 40 have been saved. Tiie loss of life, according to the latest estimates, numbers 74. The San Juan foundered in five minutes following the crash, which occurred in a dense fog.

Tiie steamer San Juan, tiie captain of which was Adolph Asplund, was rammed by tiie tanker Dodd, south of Half-Moon Bay, 12 miles from an isolated mountainous shore. Tiie tanker saved 27, but was badly injured itself and had to leave the scene for Ihe shore. A lumber carrier reported that iL found ten others. The fate of the remainder is unknown, for they had Lo leap for their lives as the ship listed. -Many were asleep and went down with the ship. The San Juan was an old boat. Captain Asplund is aged 65. He had. retired, hut took command of the San Juan when tiie .owners asked Idm as a substitute for'the usual commander, wlio is on vacation in London.

A wirclpss message from the rescuing ship staled that Captain Asplund went down with I lie San Juan. The operator was attempting to describe tiie wreck when the wireless room was Hooded. Two’ coastguard cutters are en route to the scene of the tragedy, while other vessels on the spot are searching for survivors, hut it is feared that at least 50 have been lost.
